In an era where everything is complex, it’s nice to see a simple pattern highlighted. As a fly tying/fishing newb, it is also nice to know that one doesn’t need the most ornate patterns to catch fish.

And they really work. I can’t tell you how many trout I’ve caught on variations of that fly, or that fly wrapped with a little silver or gold wire, in black, red, gray, cream, olive, brown, etc. My best was memorable – a 26" rainbow on a size 26 black midge pupa (black thread, silver rib, gray dubbing) on 7x tippet from the San Juan River in fall, 2001. Luckiest catch of my life.
