Tassie Tarantula SBS

Mick Hall’s bullethead variation on the Turck Tarantula was the Jackson Hole One Fly winner in '96. Cool fly, mostly petrochemical byproducts.

hook - Dai Riki 280 #8
thread - UTC 140 yellow
undertail - Congo Hair white
overtail - Krystal Flash pearl
body - 2mm foam yellow
underwing - Congo Hair white
overwing - Krystal Flash pearl
head - elk hair
legs - medium rubber yellow

Part 1

Mash down barb; start thread at eye, cover gap width

clean, stack, measure (hook length) a thick clump of elk hair; tie in (2 soft loops), apply steady tension, let it spin

trim butts, cover shank with thread

tie in a clump of CH; wrap back to bend and trim (gap width)

tie in some KF, fold and wrap back to bend; trim a little longer than the CH

Part 2

tie in a strip of 2mm foam (about 1/3 gap width); squirt a little Super Glue on the shank, wrap it forward, tie off and trim

tie in another (thicker) clump of CH; trim about even with the overtail

tie in overwing, trim even with underwing

push the elk hair back, make sure it’s evenly distributed around the hook eye

pull the hair back, capture it with 2 soft wraps then pull it tight

Part 3

add legs

whip finish, SHHAN and you’re done (you could trim out the hair under the throat - I left it as in the original tie)
