Tackle for Alaskan Fly Fishing - Question

My son is in the military and has been assigned to Alaska. He will be living on the Kenai Peninsula. I want to help him assemble the proper fly tackle for fishing Alaskan coastal and inland waters. I would be grateful if any of you with Alaskan fly fishing experience could recommend rod sizes and lines that we should consider for salmon, trout, etc.

Thanks,

Coach

When my son was stationed in Fairbanks I gave him a 9’ 7wt. T&T. He used it extensively and was pleased with it. On salmon he used a monstrous old Fenwick glass rod for 10 wt. but even that wouldn’t have worked except for having a reel that carried a lot of backing. Day in, day out on trout and grayling a 5 or 6 would be fine.

5wt for Grayling, 7wt for trout & dollies when salmon are present (a 7wt is good enough for most salmon up to 10-12lbs or so). I’d step up to an 8wt for sinking lines and bigger salmon, and at least a 10wt for Kings. Cheers.
