has anyone noticed the pharmaceutical advertising where an elderly man appears to take his son and grandson fishing and is using a rod that is no longer than 4 feet long? He seems to “throw” the line out instead of casting it. the stripping guide seems to be extended from the rod blank some 1 1/2" too.
Is that the one where he’s wearing a huge fly fishing vest with absolutely nothing attached to it?
With the rod and reel looking like a surf rod?
If it’s the commercial I am thinking of the rod looks like a spinning rod with a fly reel, I was wondering if it could be a center pin rig. TV ad flyfisherman are one of my favorite peeves. There was a poster in our favorite cafereria line that had an automatic reel on the seat backward, but the food was great for a southern boy.
I know they have a video they play at church of a fly fisherman landing a man who acts like a fish but the fisherman is a pretty good flycaster, his fight techniques are poor however.
I know the ad. That’s not a fly rod. No idea what it is.
That other guy with gout is way, way too wristy.
Gillette did it right. They had Jason Borger casting in the ad.
I’ve wondered about that - thought it was just some fighting butt arrangement.
thanks uncle jesse. now I can rest easier as I’m waiting for Sandy to pass
That commercial has bugged me for months. My wife got tired of my pointing out all the inconsistencies with the reality of flyfishing, although there are a few people around that probably could have made it work.
To me it looked like a center pin reel on a short spinning rod. Every time I see it I say something. finally my film maker son got tired of me vetching and said “dang it, it’s all marketing” that reel “shows” real well. the un eduacted will know the guy is taking everyone fishing and we are supposed to be more focused on the product. What’s that a commercial for again?
Maybe the guy has a rod just a bit shorter and needs his medicine.
Of course, your son is correct, commericials are made for the the “dumb masses”. [say it slowly] That’s the reason there are so many attractive ladies and guy in commericals and so few real scientists and doctors explaining things.
I get that it’s not real. What I don’t undersand is why anyone cares?
Buddy
Yup, I’m STILL searching for that lodge with a beautiful view and two bathtubs overlooking the ocean…
Buddy, we’re lobbying for full employment of real fly fishermen (at least the ones who want to be employed) instead of a bunch of doofus’s who think they are fishing for flies.
and who just sits in a bath tub without water. and why are there 2 tubs in the middle of no where. I thought that once you took the pill you wouldn’t want separate tubs.
Hi All,
The thing that is the big joke to me is how it is a place thats “hard to find”…and it looks like they drive the vehicle right up to the spot, unload, and then walk about 20 feet to the water.
I haven’t been to many (read that as none) great trout fishing spots that you drive right up to, especially in any area that has many people, or where there is much tourism.
Yep, the commercial is a joke.

Gandolf
Maybe this will do until you find the two tubs, although I agree with Cheffy on the two tub deal.
