Tied this up for a Syl Nemes Memorial Swap on a soft hackle forum.
Hook: Daiichi 1100 size 20 Thread: Olive 12/0 Hackle: Medium Dun Hen Body: Herl from a Grey Goose Quill Feather. I was out so I used herl from a Blue Eared Pheasant Quill. Rib: Tag end of tying thread counter wound up the body.
This should fish well as an upstream soft hackle. It’s tied on a light wire hook to fish the top 12 inches or so of the water column.
Good looking fly REE. I just like the looks of a well tied Soft Hackle. I have done very well during the BWO hatches this spring on some of the soft hackles you sent me last year. Now I am going to have to get the vise and tie a few up myself.
Ben.
Beautiful fly, there REE!! And yes, they do fish well. Soft hackles are by far my go-to fly for those mountains we fish in … where ever they are … must be a senior moment that I just can’t quite remember the names of …
Thanks for the kind comments everyone. It was indeed an honor to take part in a Syl Nemes Memorial Swap. I can’t think of anyone who did more for wet fly fishing in the US than Syl. Thanks to Donald Nicolson, I have been a dedicated soft hackle/flymph fanatic for several years. All those years as a dry fly or die type, I didn’t know what I was missing.
Thank you, Gents. Love tying the wee wets, and in this case wee is the operative word. Those size 20 hooks get more difficult to tie on as I age.
Gig, yup, Donald got to me several years ago, through FAOL. Made a wet fly guy out of me rather quickly after tying and fishing some of them. The fly was tied for the swap over on the IBF board.
