swaps and such??

Might be the wrong area for this question…but…

Someone explain to me how swaps…such as “fly swaps” work here. I see different people sign up for them…and then later posts about theirs have been sent in…and nothing “in the middle”. SO how do they work as an example??

Sully, we just finished up the "celebrity swap #2 - keith fulsher" swap. That seemed to be a simple swap with a fairly short thread (30 some posts). I’d suggest you start at the bignning and scan thru the entire thread. There is also a sticky on the swap area that has basic suggested swap rules.

well…lets try this…??

I join a dryfly swap. Im told to send in 10 flys and I chose 10 Elk Hair caddis…???..what would I get in return?

nine dry flies of various types made by other tyers.

swapmeister announces a fly swap

swapmeister decides the theme of the fly swap

swapmeister has decided on “stonefly nymphs” as the theme

swapmeister decides the maximum number of tyers will be 12, including the swapmeister

swapmeister sets up a sign up date and a due date (usually a month to tie your flies)

tyers sign up for the swap and declare what pattern they will tie. tyers usually agree to the swapmeisters due date but as is life, there will always be procrastinators and they will skip the due date, thus irritating the other 11 swappers because the swap flies will be late. dont procrastinate.

tyers tie their flies and attach toe tags, put them in a fly box of some sort and then put the fly box in a self addressed stamped envelope for the return ride back to you. the self addressed return envelope goes into another envelope that is mailed to the swapmeister, hopefully before the due date!

swapmeister gets all of the swap flies and sits down with a cold adult beverage and sorts out all of the flies into all of the fly boxes. all of the fly boxes goes into that self addressed stamped envelope and gets sent back to the swappers for their enjoyment.

OK, still wanna join a swap??

GOT IT!!! Thanks fellas.

Sully one word of Warning about SWAPS…They is Defenitily Addicitive!
Fun Too:lol:

Another thing - it’s customary to include a couple extra for the swapmeister.

Sully,

As the swapmeister, you get to make the rules, but you should post the rules for your swap on the first thread. The rules should include items like a sign up date, a mailing date, a particular theme if you choose etc. Many rules are customary, like sending a SASE for your returned flies.

Swaps like a ‘favorite swap’ or a ‘go-to fly swap’ are open to anything. If you primarily fish nymps on a small creeks with a 3 wt, and a pike angler signs up, you’ll end up with a fly bigger then some of the fish you’re used to catching. Hypothetical, but you get the idea.

Warning: once you start, you’ll be addicted! G

Yep, give it a try. It is fun. You will get some very nice flies, some very novice flies, and some in-between. It is a good way to get new ideas and examples of different patterns.
