Super glue question

I was perusing the web checking out some parachute adams when I ran across a video that showed the tier using super glue at the base of the hackle post to secure in the hackle. He just put a drop of super glue on the hackle post, wrapped the hackle suspended the end with a hackle pliers and waited 30 seconds and viola! finished.

My question is do you think this glue will hold after a good soaking?

It almost seems like a bit of a cheat.

I hate trying to secure the hackle in a parachute because I keep getting it caught when I try to whip finish the darned thing and this method seems like the solution.

Do any of you guys/gals use crazy glue in your tying?
If so have you ever had the bond come apart?

It works great for me here on the Umpqua.

I use an old CD put a large drop on the CD then use my bobkin to put a small drop where ever I need it.

The super glue taks a long time to cure if it is in a large drop.

GBF:

As far as the bond not holding; I just read an article about bass fishermen using Zap-a-Gap to glue Senkos, (soft plastics) to the worm hooks so they don’t slide.

The author claimed that the bond held even if the hook and worm were wet so I guess you should have no worries when using Super Glue at the bench.

Ive used superglue on alot of leech patterns…

I also know that when it dries it becomes a solid…
(test superglue on a piece of rabbit strip… let set for 5 min… and wiggle the strip… it breaks)

on a para post… I think it would work… but no more then a drop… any more then that I think it would work as a wieght and the fly would land upside down…

Hey GB,

I use Loctite Super Glue in the “Easy Brush” bottle. Never had a fly (glue bond) come apart.

I saw a guy at the Charlotte fly show do the same thing 3 years ago. He used zap-a-gap instead of super glue. I came home and tied up a few and they worked just fine.

i use the original super lue on the head of my flies, they do not come apart. i use the super glue because it is cheaper than Zap A Gap

I use super glue on numerous patterns including parachutes.

For an easy way to finish a parachute fly without messing up the hackle check out this page

Thanks for the good answers .You have given me the confidence to use it. Of Course if it doesn’t work I will be forced to hunt you all down and glue your fingers to your forehead.

don’t get it on clothes, the spot where the glue was will become hard. and don’t touch the fly while the glue is still wet, you’ll look pretty silly with a fly stuck to your hand

If you’ve got places to go, people to see, or hear the boss’s footsteps coming down the hall you can hit the Super Glue with a spritz of Kick-It (CA glue accelerator). It sets up the glue instantly, just like… wait… I can’t snap my fingers… they’re glued together…

Gnu Bee - I’ve done it and continue to do it. Found my parachutes last 2 maybe 3 takes before they’re unravelled. With a drop of cement … the body wears out first.

oh yeah

nanner, nanner, nanner … without a rocky hill for you to take your bearings on - you’d be lost in the wide open yonder …

darrell,

Super Glue or Zap-A-Gap will stand up to all the abuse. Dick Talleur showed this to several of us years ago at a class given at the old Hunter’s Angling Supplies–worked then, works now
