Sunday funnies

…went to my favorite lake Sunday; weather was nice, but a little windy…

Wanted to really give a new rod that was custome made for me by Lou Perez, “loudog” here on the board. He took a Cabela’s Stowaway 8.5 3wt and dropped the butt section; making it a 6’10" 3-4 wt. I strung it up with SA Ultra 4 WF4F line on an Orvis BBS II reel.

Balance is perfect and it casts as far as your double-haul ability will allow.

Ended up with 11 fish landed and 5 missed. The take was real subtle all day.

Here’s the nice crappie I caught yesterday that didn’t come out this morning when I made this post…

Nice Jim, glad the rod worked for ya. You may need to save a seat on that Jon Boat of yours and show me that honey hole come spring. Those are some real nice looking gills.

Lou

That’s some nice fish - especially for this time of year. We’re due a short “Indian summer” latter this week. I’ll be out then.

Loudog - nice grip/reel seat. Did you turn it yourself??

Donald

Sweet job jsentell!

Thanks for sharing!

I was wondering what the fly is in that last Gills mouth. Looks like a good one.

I wonder too, looks kinda like a chain eye bugger???

Hey Beedleach,

The seat is a PacBay S1 with maple insert and nickle silver slide bands. The cork is a Pac Bay cigar that I modified, quite a bit actually. I cut about 1.5 inches off the ends and turned it down considerably. The original grip was your usual clunky cigar and I made it more appropriate for this small rod.

Thanks,

Lou

…hey, my friends (all of you) call me Jim…

Lou, I eMailed you just before I left for work; spring it is…

JC: forget it, I live in southern New Jersey…you don’t eat anything out of Joisey waters, just pick up a copy of our Fish & Game guide and it lists all the waters in the state with the warning “do not eat” or 1 per month!!! Ain’t America great?

drolfson and zzdruid: the fly was a figment of my imagination last year and I have caught everything on it; LMB, yellow perch, crappie, gills, pickerel…
It’s beadchain eyes on a #8 hook, couple of pieces of red marabou and red crystal flash in the tail, wine color chrystal chenille and old junk hackle.
Went to the same lake today for 2 hours and caught 7 nice gill as pictured above. I use it and a #10 Frog popper almost exclusively all season.

As far as the rod goes; it’s the nicest little rod I’ve ever owned. Let “loudog” fill you in on the finer details, I’m still watching Garcia’a tape and waiting for Scheck’s book!

Regards, Jim

Jim,
I swear, EVERY gill fly needs some red on it, doesn’t it?
BTW, darn nice lookin’ gill.
Mike
