Sulky Thread

Larry’s latest entry is a nice baetis (looks pretty easy to tie) using Sulky rayon thread for the abdomen:

I’ve never tried the stuff but the effect looks neat and my wife has some of it in her sewing gear; may have to borrow some and play around. Anyone else have any experience with it?

Regards,
Scott

the sulky holoshimmer threads make a very strong, inexpensive alternate to conventional small tinsel

i use the metallics often

Scott,

Ck. out how Loren Williams uses Sulky Metallic HERE:

PT,

Cool fly; thanks for the link.

Is it any different than some of the other metallic threads around?
Great looking fly.

I’ve never used Sulky rayon thread, but I’ve used Coats & Clark 40 wt Rayon Decorative Sewing Thread. The rayon has a great sheen, and I wound it to form an abdomen, very similar to LOJ’s use in the link.

The trout loved it, and it’s an easy tie. The Coats rayon comes on a slightly wider spool than standard tying thread, but it can be used in a bobbin.

One problem with the Coats rayon, it’s the weakest thread that I’ve ever used, and the trout tore it up. For durability, I have to put a layer of glue under the thread.

While Sulky Embroidery Thread has very few uses in my mind, or at least has no particular advantage over any other thread that I have found, Sulky Sliver Metallic has been used for quite some time in CO and the SW for midge patterns and the like. Good stuff.

Hi Scott,
Happy New Year and a belated Merry Christmas.Yes, I have used the sulky threads (metallic type) in green, brown and black for nymphs. Have not had any problems with durability or breakage, and fortunately I have one of Griffith’s elongated bobbins. I recently discovered that there are a couple of other Euro threads in silks as well as metallics. If you are near to a “G Street” fabrics (Rockville/ Gaithersburg area), Hancock fabrics and/or Joann’s fabrics you will be blown away at the threads selection. Have fun!

Gerri,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, too. We’ve got a Joann’s nearby; I’ll check out their inventory of threads. Thanks for the info.

Scott
