I’m building a 6’6" 2wt for my brother. I wasn’t planning on outfitting him with a reel and line, but started thinking that maybe if I could find a cheap reel, I would, so that he would at least have something to fish it with until he can get what he wants.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a cheap reel for a 2wt. By cheap I mean anything under $50 (and everyone laughs).
I have a J. Austin Forbes Magnesium on my 2 weight and love it. While there are none of the magnesium models showing up on ebay there are a few machined aluminum modles that are small and light (1.6 oz) enough for a 6’6" 2 wt. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290479626671
I have no affiliation with the seller, I’m just a happy J.Austin Forbes reel owner.
I’ve got one of the J. Austin Forbes magnesium reels for my 2wt, I love it, but I’m not able to spend that kind of money on a reel for him right now, not that I wouldn’t like to.
I’ll take a look at the Cabella’s prestige, thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming please.
Hardy click/pawl Flyweight, Orvis CFO123 or II, Orvis Flyweight by J.W. Young, J. Austin Forbes Thistle, Ross R1, Ross San Miguel 1, Ross Gunnison #1, Hart Traun F1, Abel TR1, or the aforementioned Pflueger 1492.
I have a Martin MR34 on my 6’9" 1 wt. It is just about the right size for a short rod. The fly start is a bit bigger, and heavier. I think I paid about forty bucks for the Martin.
ARE YOU FU**ING SERIOUS??? The guy says he wants a reel under $50, and there are a ton of reels that will perform great for $20 -$40, and you recommend reels like Hardy where half the price is for the label?? Hardy, Orvis cfo, Abel???

Your post is as about as much help as someone asking if they should buy a G loomis NRX , or a Sage Z axis and someone chiming in they should buy a Scientific Anglers rod from Walmart!!!
Please excuse me Mr. salt flytyer. I suppose I read the original post too quickly.
Neglected to see the $50.00 max output. An honest error. I know what all these reels cost, and in my opinion
they’re all worth it.
Hope you are ok and didn’t suffer a mild stroke?
Thank you for taking the time to enlighten me and others.
A more thoughtful response, in my opinion, might have been…“Bob, I believe you misread the original posters question.”
