Suggestion's for New Reel

:? Need some thoughts (I’d say advice, but I’ve seen what happens in other topics) on a new Reel for the “Forecast” 6’6" 2 wt. I’ll have finished this week. I’m not sure if I’ll be fishing it as a 2 or 3 wt. I would like to keep the cost under $100.00 for 2Reasons I’ve been off work with a Rotator Cuff Injury And want to have more than enough $ availiable for the Michigan Fish-In and secondly I’m "Thrifty( not cheep thats Jean’s opnion). Would really apprieciate some feedback on this as the more I look the more confused I get. Those that know me, Know I can “worry” a topic to death.
Thanx Bill

Orvis Battenkill

I would look for an old used Hardy Flyweight reel. Don’t know what one goes for used these day’s? I have one that I use on my 3wgt and love it. I have had it for many years and it is still in great shape and has landed a lot of fish over the years. Ron

Another vote for the Orvis Battenkill. I have had my Battenkill 3/4 disc for 10 years and it still functions perfectly. I think they are $79 now. Or for $20 more, the Battenkill Barstock.

Bass Pro Hobbs Creek, I own 2 of them, can’t beat them for the price! A quality reel. $39.00

 I’m no expert but for the $ the Bass Pro folks have some pretty good reels the Hobbs Creek and their White River reels have both performed week for me the White River is listed as a 4-6 wt. , the Hobbs Creek starts with a 3-4 wt. Here the link for the Hobbs Creek http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog. … get=browse

I landed a 7# +/- grass carp on my old 3 wt. with the small White River on it.

Bill,
Another vote for the Orvis Battenkill. Besides being a quality reel, Orvis’ customer service is, IMO, only equaled by LL Bean. If something goes wrong with the reel, you have nothing to worry about.

 Before making your choice based on the obvious choice of the above mentioned posts, check out a Teton Tioga. You can usually find what you are looking for for around $100.00 and have it shipped as well.I bought one a couple of months ago and I am very happy with it.Mine is a anodized green reel in a size 6. It’s made in a large arbor or a standard arbor. They are both interchangeable on the same frame to boot.
Good luck on your choices.

Rich

Can you wait until the Michigan FI? Be lots to look at there. Might even find one for sale!

I have an Orvis Battenkill and an Orvis Barstock. For a 5 weight I love my Battenkill Disc. I think the model is 5/6. For my 4 weight I’m using the Battenkill Barstock. I don’t know the model # but it’s the small one. They sell for $99, but I found a coupon that works for $25 off any sale of $50 or more. Email me and I’ll try to send you a copy of the coupon. That’s how I received it, and Orvis honored it at their shop in Hayden Lake Idaho. Both the Battenkill Disk and the Battenkill Barstock are made in China, but both are quality reels.
Also check out Hook & Hackle, and Global Dorber. Both sponsors here and quite reputable. With quality and guarantee.
Good Luck,
God Bless,

Have you thought about the Vista Turbine Fly Reel? I don’t have one, but neighbor has two, and has great things to say about the aluminum bodies. He has an extra small and a small. The price is right, and the lightness might work for you. Just a thought…

 Thanks to all for the replys.
J.C.: I want to have this all set for the Fish-In, the orthopod said lighter would be better on my shoulder.
Diane: I’ll have to look up the Vista.
I just might have to head to Detroit to one of the “Orvis” shops, and “BassPro”.
Again Many Thanks
Bill

REMEMBER THE MICHIGAN FISH-IN

I also recently purchased a teton tioga and I love it. Good Price, good reel. It’s actually my first “nice” reel so I can’t really compare it to any others. Just thought I would throw another vote out there.
Best
Andrew

I am by no means and expert, but I want to second what GBurgFisher said about the Teton Tioga reels. They are totally solid and smooth. Very well put together and have GREAT drags, got two and will get another when time comes.

Well I believe that any or all of the above-listed reels are going to fit the bill. Unless you get way cheap and chintzy and buy utter junk most reels are going to be just fine for a two weight rod and its fishing applications. All have spoken sooth in this thread.

I personally believe that you’d be better off devoting your attention to finding which of these many reels are the lighter weight. Don’t want a big old honkin’ boat anchor on the end of that sweet little two weight
