I have three reels with two or three spools for each. I store the reels and spools in the case that they came with and store the lot in a rubbermade container. The container works fine for storing at home, but for traveling I would like something more portable. What would you suggest for a traveling reel case? It need to have it hold a minimum of 2 reels, 2 extra spools and space for tippet and other line accessories.

I have one similar to the flat one of these without compartments and like it.
This is just a suggestion that came to mind when I read your post. Have you looked at camera cases. You will need to look at cases for the older larger cameras like the Pentax K1000. I found several cases in flea markets and second hand stores. The cases are padded and just the right size for traveling plus have dividers that are adjustable. Just a suggestion and nothing more.
How about one of those insulated cases they sell for a six pack of soda. They are padded with insulation and most have several pockets and a shoulder strap and can be had for around ten bucks.

Here’s what I use…

If you keep a couple of the CD sleeves, they serve as a nice leader/tippet inside the case.
This is the one I use. It is great and can be carried on a plane.
Orvis also has a new one that has reel cases and holds rods as well. I think that is my next bag.
I also use the Orvis case that Lucky489 recommends, it’s a nice case and the “pockets” are all adjustable. I keep extra leaders, backing & tippet in the pouches located in the lid too.
I use the cheap shaving/ toiletries bags that they sell everywhere. Not a lot of protection but they usually also have a zippered side pouch that i put leaders and line cleaner in. RC
Try Cabelas for a reel case in two sizes similar to the Orvis ones. I have a “Vision” one and its just the bees knees for me.
I use the cases they each came in. For travel… I still do.
JC, with the Orvis case I leave the reels in the factory case and they still fit into the Orvis case, very well protected.
Is this what you mean ,Ray?
This isn’t the Orvis one but similar…and you can see why I like it without compartments…
And what do you think about the classy duct tape labeling
I took out some reels and cases for the photo…but I can grab this bag and take off …or I can grab a few [in their original cases ] and throw them in my baggage which is what I think JC is referring to…
I am getting some good ideas here.
Ducksterman,
Nice touch with the duct tape.
I like those fishpond and orvis reel caring cases but man 60 bills for a freaking bag
Those cabelas ones look nice and 40 dollars cheaper oh wait their not for fly reels thats why
Cabelas have them for both, in a couple of sizes. They are similar to the pic (above) but with dividers. All my reels and spools are in one bag so its easy to pack the whole lot if I want to.
I though I had a use for multi-reel cases but found that they rarely left my home.
The experience of making a couple of trips with very tight weight restrictions on remote flights forced my to leave cases home on those trips.
Did I need the cases, or maybe some more flies, or spare line, or something. I even needed to leave the neoprene covers that came with the reels home on one occasion because I needed the weight elsewhere. On that trip, I wrapped each reel inside of a piece of clothing.
I then discovered that I didn’t miss the case.
The multi-reel cases also took up extra volume.
Most of the time I just keep the reels in a neoprene cover put them in my carry on or checked luggage.
As others have noted there are many pre-made options, and you can make your own too, quite possibly by modifying a case or bag that you already have that was intended for another purpose…
I just bought a case from Gander Mountain, it is padded, has a padded handle and a shoulder strap. It has padded dividers. It will hold 10 reels or spools. it also has 9 mesh compartments in the lid, that can hold tippit materials and lines. Or other items. It is dark olive green in color. It cost me $19.99 plus tax. Hope this is of some help. John
