STURGEON has anyone caught one on a fly?

I grew up in Glenn’s Ferry, Idaho with the snake for a back yard. I have a picture of my Gramps kneeling next to a seven foot Sturgeon. Back in those days I guess they ate them not to mention the cavier (sp) (eggs)
I was back there a few years ago and got to float the snake in my toon. I was fishing an 8 weight just in case I found one, but, I am sure I wasn’t on the bottom where they hang out, and the current had me going a little too fast to stay in one spot long enough. Caught some nice bows on the float however. Would have loved to get a dinasour.
Watched a program once of a guy in Canada hooking a 6’ in a doughnut float tube…what a kick.

Now you see why I never swam in the Missouri River as a kid. That fish is as long as our station wagon!

But not very bright!!

Signed in and will check it out when I have more time.

Here in Idaho sturgeon are a plenty. You can go to cj strike and catch them all day long. Can You catch them on a fly rod NO. As previously mentioned they go by smell and, I who am foolish enough to fish for salmon and steelhead from the shore with a six weight, woould never go after sturgeon with a fly rod. I liken it to tying your line to a car and tell them to go 35 miles an hour and then stop them. Lots of fun to catch though.

So where is the Sturgeon

all fish on my site were caught on the fly…hence, no sturgeon pics.

I went to Sauvie Island (Portland area)today and walked. The Island is next to the Columbia river, where sturgeon live.
We stopped at a 7 Eleven and I notice a snelled sturgeon rig for sale. 1/0 barbless hook connected to 135 lb. dacron line.
Probably wouldn’t be much fun to try and flycast it.

Sturgeon where we sampled, caught a dozen or so, one hole in the river, 2 part days of fishing.

22 to 46 lbs caught on 50lbs test.
various ages, conditions.
They eat fish, bivalves, crayfish, etc.

Will still try with an unscented fly, we’re there sampling for population estimates anyways… will have all the other gear set up, but it would be nice to try with a flyrod.
