Strung out on San Juan

Does anyone know how to tie this fly?
I used it this past weekend and it just killed the trout on Taneycomo. The fly shop I bought it from had no clue about it and said they didnt tie them, they purchased them and he didnt know how to tie it up.

T7,
What size hooks are those? I haven’t tied them but can make a guess. The trailing hook looks like it has a leader attached which is threaded through some red tubing (eg larva lace). The tubing is then pushed over the eye of the hook theleader is then looped through the eye of the front hook and the tubing then lashed to the top of the front hook. .

I saw an ad that featured it and it was by the same folks that came up with the “Strung-Out MOAL Leech” so I presume it is a Fergus ty…the ad was a Spirit River ad…did a search and didn’t come up with a recipe then.

the hook size is 16.
the body is flexible, yet stiff. does that make sense at all?
also, the fly seems to have a little weight to it and sinks some on its own. however i put a single #10 splitshot about 3 inches above the fly and that seemed to keep it just off the bottom, bouncing around happily.

I’d say kieth’s got the technique spot on. I’d also guess that the link between hooks is larva lace.

the hook’ll sink quickly because that front hook’s a heavier wire egg hook.

I think I’m gonna go try tying one up. looks like it’d be a great bass fly as well, assuming of course one could consider it a “fly.”

Mikeytwoshoes,
You figure it out pls let me know. I have a big challenge. I see trout…but they not hitting anything I caught them wit last year. I am averaging 1 trout for about every 30 different flies I tie on!
Puh…lease…post it.

BTW…1-2 inches fresh snow on the ground and finally has stopped. Sky doesn’t look promising though.

Why wouldnt it be considered a “fly”?

Prolly cause it’s a plastic worm…!!

I seen the Fergus site very recently , Through a link posted some place on this site???..can’t remember where, And they have a whole series of “Strung out” flies and the Crazy anchovy looked awesome…and I’d bet it’d tear up the local smallies as well as anything…If I see the site again I’ll post the link back here for you…Most of the flies listed did not “as yet” have the tying info posted…It was soupposedly the newest FFing site on the web…???

That thing looks like it has a high chance of foul hooking.

That thing looks like it has a high chance of foul hooking.

Actually every fish I caught using this fly took the front hook. and only 1 time did the 2nd hook stick into the fish.

Does bring up the interesting topic of when a fly is not a fly though does it not…

I would consider this an imitation bait hook myself and not a fly… However many lures do not imitate any living creature.

Fishing rules on most of the UK rivers and Reservoirs would ban the above fly (or whatever). Most would ban any maggot imitations and yet allow trout pellet imitations. Doesn’t make much sense…

Bill…duckstermmmmmaaaaannnnn here…

Here’s the link to the home page…this worm isn’t there yet…[the sculpin looks interesting]…

Here’s an online shop that sells the worm:

But the stuff really looks like scoubidou lace:

ooops, here:

why doo people hate on the worm. there a huge part of a trouts diet in tailwater fisheries and spring creeks. almost anywere really. there amazing wether they are tied with wire, floss, thread, chenille, larva lace, beads etc. ive met soo many people who said using the worm is cheating. but in all honesty what fish can resist a worm…

That is really a neat setup. I would bet that the covering material is some sort of a heat shrink plastic.

Note it says…“A bendable, moldable,”…wonder what that could be???

Bendable, Moldable

Sounds like a piece of wire connecting the two hooks. Just my opinion, but I think a red hook would look great as the second.

you gotcher pattern right here.

I was able to make a good copy by cutting a peice of hollow larva lace 2in. long.Wet (spit) med. ultra wire and slde it up the larva lace.Fold the wire over and start it back down the tube as far as you can makeing an eye.I used 20lb. power pro and used the wire to pull the line back through larva lace ( not easy).Front hook Daiichi 1110 #14 ,front hook TMC 2487#14. Put your back hook in your vice and start your thread wrapping from eye to bend and back to eye and tye down the end of the power pro to the hook and and coat with Zap a gap.
Slide the tubing down over the eye of hook and down to the bend.Slide the top hook with eye pointing forward down so the tubing runs down the back of the hook.Wrap the power pro evenly from the eye to the bend and coat with zap a gap. Put the top hook in vice and wrap your tread from eye to bend and back several times to make a taperd head. I used a brown tubing with dark matching thread and coated the thread wraps with a softex like product.
I have never tried to give tying instructioins before so did my best.Kind of complicated for a worm pattern, but to each there own.
