I will be in Boston the first week in October and will be available to fish for stripers/blues? for a few days before that week or after that week. I Googled Cape Cod and came up with several guide services: Fishing the Cape, Cape Cod Charters, Yankee Angler.
I need recommendations for guides, not necessarily in the Cape Cod area, but north or south of that area. Would really like to take a boat after stripers, but maybe too late in the year? Will have my heavy salt fly rods, waders, salty gear as I fish the salt here in Florida, so can be flexible on the east coast - wading the surf or boat. I’ve never fished the coast, so need help and recommendations.
For a good number of years I took vacation the first week of October to camp north of Boston on the Merrimack and take advantage of the fall run. Last few years I just have done weekends.
Depending on how temps are and have been, the run can be awe inspiring and amazing ( thousands of fish running by your waders, hook-ups every cast) to miserable cold wet and fishless.
I have a good friend that is a long time, excellent guide for the area north of Boston. Capt. Barry Clemson, Rowley Ma. 978 948 3750 . He’s a great flyfishing guide, one of the best. Rowley is a half hour from downtown Boston. There’s a good book called Flyfishing Boston that is geared for the salt and would outline what you need to know. Chart./white , and tan/white 1/0 clousers, some deceivers and some poppers would cover most of the bases. Peanut bunker in the 3 to 4" range is the usual bait the fish are following. 8 or 9 wt., sinking line- I use a 350 depth charge almost all the time. PM me if you want more specifics, I will be over there at least 3 or 4 days around then. If you want to split a boat trip, that might be doable, too. In the first week of Oct. I like north of Boston for the fishing and decidely less people. There’s some great places to wade fish, I won’t put them up and burn them on an open forum. If they blow out early, the southside of the Cape and Rhode Island are the places to visit. Lots of fish went into Maine this year, and there’s bait. it’ll be a good fall.
