Stretchable floss

Angler’s Choice and Uni-floss are both mentioned as having advantages over multi strand Nylon or rayon floss. Could I get some comments and source info. please.

Ray,
I think the material is actually Spandex. It is very easy to use. It also can be split to make legs for ants and beetles if desired.

I think there is some confusion of names here. There are two UNI products crossing here. UNI-Flexx and UNI-Stretch.

UNI-Flexx appears as a single elastic strand and makes good bodies on caddis larvae or other flies that benefit from a segmented appearance. It makes good legs and can be split lengthwise for finer legs or floppy antennae. I bought it as a floss, but it is not, so I threw/gave away most colours except for caddis colours.

UNI-Stretch is Spandex and is a multi-strand floss-like material. It also stretches, but is not truly elastic. It cannot be split lengthwise easily and I don’t know why you would want to. It can be twisted into a tight thread and thus on med. to large streamers can be the body (when flat) and still tie in wings and finish the head (when twisted). It does not fray like rayon or nylon floss and does not ‘spread out’ when wrapping up and down the body. Most tiers with some experience in our club have discontinued the us of other flosses except when tying classic/historic patterns. For ease of tying and for fishing UNI-Stretch is the way to go.

Hope this helps.

I use an Anger’s Choice product called “Super Floss” and it’s made of Lycra with minimal stretch.
