I’ve been asked to tie some fly’s for a raffle. Suggestion was some streamers for trout. Any suggestions to some patterns I might try?

If you are looking for Featherwing ideas ( Gray Ghost, Nine-three, Black Ghost ) For Bucktails ( Mickey Finn, Black Nosed Dace, Edson Light Tiger ) and perhaps the prettiest streamer ever tied is the the Oatman Brookie.
Take a look at the Thunder Creek style bait fish streamers. Large trout are carnivores and cannibals.
Bob Jacklin’s Platte River Special
That is a very nice streamer, top marks - 10 out of 10.
The NZ Killer style can be very attractive, have a look at Kelkay’s.
Toss in a Parson’s Glory and a Jack Sprat as a couple Matuka patterns’ from New Zealand as well. I’m partial to squirrel tail wing streamers myself. Check out the “Hammlim Minnow” in the a fly of the week section, and also the “Bluenose Squirrel Tail” for two of my patterns that I fish regularly. The HLM is still my most productive streamer pattern. A blue charm feather wing (bronze mallard feather) is nice too. The latter is best known as a salmon fly, but it will take trout when tied in the smaller sizes.

Spent an aftenoon with Bob Jacklin a week ago. He is doing fine! He still guides; runs his store; teaches free lessons on casting every Sunday evening; etc.
I bought one of his few shadow boxes with a couple flies. Hasn’t arrived yet as it was too large for my suitcase.

That is a handsome streamer. Bob does a photo show at his presentations that includes a picture of Bob releasing an 8lb brown he caught one fall, on a Platte River Special, a short distance upstream from Carter’s Bridge on the Yellowstone (I think that’s where it was, I thought I recognized it while watching his show a while back).
I asked a simple question what hook was the Plate River Special tyed on? I was hoping for who made the hook. I received this;" Most of the materials (not counting hooks) are largely self-evident". If the hook size, style and manufacture were self-evident as pittendrigh
suggests,then why did I ask the question???
What I found out was that it is a size 2 4x long from Bob’s DVD. Bob’s tying DVD is great! What I would like is for people who tye streamers to suggest some hooks they use and why. Fishin’ Jimmy
I tie Thunder Creek and large pike hackle streamers on Mustad R75S-9674 2XH/5XL straight eye Size 6 or 8 or TMC 9395 3XH/4XL straight eye size 6 or 8. IN both cases the weight helps sink the fly. The length gives you some room to work and puts the hook in the middle of the “body” so a strike from behind will hook. Woolly Buggers and Clousers on Mustad R73-9671 2XH/3XL size 8 and smaller or Mustad R74-9672 2XH/4XL in sizes 4 though 12. Again, weight to sink and length to work the pattern.

I tie most of my streamers on Mustad 9672 size 6-10, no specific reason, I just have lots of those hooks. For most of my bucktails I go back to the TMC300 in sizes 8-10, I just think bucktails “look better” tied on those hooks. For my Muddler patterns I have been using size 8-10 salmon hooks. I like the looks of the upturned eye with the deer hair head.
My choice of hook is mostly because I like the way the fly looks after I’m done tying it.

The biggest browns I’ve caught in both Idaho and Montana ate this fly, and the biggest rainbow I’ve caught in Montana also chowed down on this one.

John, we all know ugly flies catch more fish. That being said, I would be embarrassed to swap a dozen of my olive D-buggers, even if they work like crazy.
I wanna see the fish that ate those flies of yours!
