Hi, hope everyone is OK, have just seen some pretty amazing shots of winter storms on the U.S. east coast on the news. Looked fairly bad in the Washington area.
Take care out there.
All the best.
Mike.
Mike,
58 cm (20 inches) here in the Washington DC suburbs. Guess we’ll definitely have a White Christmas this year.
Regards,
Scott
You know it’s reasonably bad when they close the malls the Saturday before Christmas.
I live in the Washington area; everything was shut down, but we’ve had worse; just never this earlier in the season. A storm this size wouldn’t even make the news in many parts of the US.
Thanks for the concern.
Mike,
We measured 12.25 inches in our front yard Saturday evening in Richmond, VA. Had the VDOT been clearing roads, I would have hit a spring creek a couple hours west but instead spent the weekend with my lovely wife throwing snowballs at our dogs.
Other than the mayhem caused by falling over the last shopping weekend before Christmas, things around here weren’t too bad. It did make me miss my old RWD Volvos as the snow provided copious opportunity for donuts but alas, we were relegated to doing them in the Honda in reverse.
Thanks for the thoughts, hopefully the rest of the folks that took the hit fared well.
Marty
Thanks Mike. We had to shovel a little “global warming” here but nothing major. Folks around these parts tend to forget that they live in a climate where it is supposed to snow in the winter. Tends to bring out some Christmas magic at this time of year.
Our press up here likes to over react to these things. The sensational sells copy while the mundane does not. Having grown up down wind of the Great Lakes I don’t get excited about snow until it gets up to my nose. Oh, I am 6’ 2" (188cm) tall.
The fore casted Christmas Eve storm is a bit worrisome as they think it could be a snow and ice event. The ice is very dangerous.
You might find the foll lowing page about the powerful storms that rage up the Atlantic coast of the U.S. interesting. We call them Nor’easter storms:
our local newspaper had my area (southeastern connecticut) having about 2 feet of snow. i’m only 5’ 5" tall and some places i walked was about mid thigh, probably drifted snow.
Well guys, glad to hear it has not been too bad and a white christmas is nice. Here in Auckland we are expecting a bright sunny day and temps around 22c. I may have to have a cold beer just to cool down!
All the best.
Mike.
Oh, golly Mike! We feel badly for you! Only 22C, ech? THAT’S A FREEKIN’ 72 degrees F!!! LOL!!
Have a wonderful, wonderful Christmas !
Hugs, with chilly hand at the ends of the arms!!
Seems that the storm just picked up steam as it rolled across the country! Last week when it hit here in Wisconsin, we ended up with 14" or so. Now they are talking another big one coming in on Christmas Eve into Christmas day, possibly bigger than the last. Global warming they say, obviously none of these knuckleheads visit the north in the winter. 8 degrees is about the average high temp lately
We had our token half-a-millimeter of snow. It’s warming up nicely and I’m pondering a little fishing Christmas Eve. Betty, it is NOT our fault if you choose to live in a place that indulges winter.
Ed
All the best to you, too, Mike. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Regards,
Scott
Ed, you know I would move someplace where they don’t have snow but they all have such disgusting customs like eating grits and okra pickles:p.
Besides it means three months or so of not having to mow the grass and I would have to miss this.
Global Warming does not mean that everywhere is going to have a increase in air temperatures…
What is does mean is the the Oceans Water Temperature is rising, for every 1 degree Celsius of temperature rise, will result is more frequent and violent storm systems. More Hurricanes, Tornado’s, Heavy Rains, and Higher Winds. Not only more of these destructive storms, but also more intense storms that cause even more damage. More Level 5 hurricanes and tornados, more high winds, with geater wind speeds, more torental rains drowning crops. Earlier frosts destroying crops in the field, before harvest. Other places will not receive life giving rains, and become even more arid, becoming unable to support life, or the growing of crops.
In Minnesota, our winters have not been that cold, over a long period. Our forests of pine trees are dying out, being replaced with soft and hardwood leafed trees. We are seeing reports of new animal species in our region, that have never been here before. In the Land of 10,000 Lakes, there is more use of the aquafier, and there are bans being put in place to stop the aquifiers becoming unusable by the over use of withdrawn water, versus any new water entering the aquifer to replenish it.
Population keeps expanding outward, converting farm land into housing developments.
As the Old Carny Guy said, “Hold on to your hats, you ain’t seen nothing yet!”
Yeah still now snow is Southern Ontario, few flakes coming down now but nothing like we used to get. Hopefully we get a white christmas, would feel weird without the white stuff.
Merry Christmas to all and a safe and Happy New Year!!
Mike
