Storing fly lines

“Not, fly fishing, for MONTHS” is just a concept that makes wanting to take medications seem like a good idea!??!

You mean taking winter medications is a bad idea?

SMClark …

How did you trim the rim…what did you use???

That is an awesome idea. But do you not get a tangle when re-lining the reel in spring?

Plus I recommend marking the the correct end to tie back onto the reel because once I put a weight forward line on backwards. it didn’t cast worth a darn. My fishing buddy a really good caster spotted the problem and we had to reverse it while at the lake. Did I ever feel like a dufus.

Now I use Joan wulffs idea to mark the wf end with 5 marks for 5wt lines.
6 marks for 6 wts etc so that the correct end is easily identifiable. An additional red dot identifies my wf lines. A green dot signifies my WF sinking tip lines , and an orange dot for a level line my grandson trolls with. I also have a color system for the different sink rates on my sinking lines. Cause sure as god made little apples those stickers will fall off sooner or later.

The two biggest enemies to polymers (fly lines are polymers) is light and heat. Winding in large coils wont hurt … But heep the lines in the dark and cool. Not necessarily in a refrigerator but in the basement away from heat sources.

In the same way don’t store your rods, reels and lines in the trunk of your car in the summer and expect them to last forever.

I too wonder about that???

duckster: I roughed it out with a saber saw holding it in my hands so I could pull the plastic up snug against the base of the saw to prevent bouncing; cleaned up the edge with a really coarse file I had amongst my welding stuff. In addition, I clipped ~1" gap out of the top of each hole with diagonal cutters to ensure the foam stands up above the rim . . .

GnuBee: I really haven?t had a reason to re?line since I put this thing together last week?end, BUT if I don?t get too careless with line coils, don?t (yet) see reason I can?t put them back on the cord reel, re?line from there. Bound to be slower than removing it to start with, as there?ll be line crossing itself that takes some patience to sort out, but that?s true of the inexpensive $50 rigs, too. And I can?t imagine it getting nearly so tangled as some of the coiled leaders I?ve dropped in the floor when taking them out of the bag !

Pictured line is silk, came on an old Meisselbach Rainbow I bought off eBay, so it?s not overly ?directional?. I have used the Wulff method, too, including 10yd marks for depth on some intermediates. Careful with dot colors, though, one day you may be fishing a green AirCel, too . . .
