Stocked Trout pattern

Yesterday I went out to fish the stocked trout. I caught 1. I tried most of my nymphs, the greenie weenie caught the trout. The Bait fisherman were catching them on butter worms on the bottom. the water was high and cloudy. Should have I tried more streamers? Any suggestions for catching stocked trout.

A Globug (yarn egg fly) might do it.

Try a large bead for the egg or maybe tipping a bare hook with corn. This has worked for me in the past in Georgia but it might come down to what the stockers have been fed before they were released. Best of luck.

Try some bright marabou winged flies, a Cat’s Whisker is a good choice.

Hook - size 12,10 or 8, wet fly or lure hook.
Thread - Black or a fluo red.
Tail - White marabou, not too long.
Body - Chartreuse chenille.
Rib - Silver wire or oval tinsel.
Wing - A bunch of white Marabou.
Eyes - Silver bead chain.
If the tail or wing is uneven, nip of surplus with finger nails, do not cut.
The wing should be level with the tail.
It is not a difficult fly to tie and is a well known killer of stocked rainbows.
Now I’ll try to find a picture.

This fly works with black marabou and other colours, coral pink.

I know it is hard for some to believe, but, stocked trout are fish too! I have 2 rivers here that the State stock. Right now, if you want to catch any, they are hitting midges in size 20. You can also catch some on size 14 & 16 wet flies. Depending on the time of day, you can catch the larger fish on #14 olive buggers. All during the day there will be some mayfly hatching and blue wing olives and you could catch some trout (stockers) on dry flies during the hatch. Since I do not have any native wild trout here, I do not know what they would be hitting if they were in my rivers.

You can’t beat a #12 san juan worm for stocked fish. The original red in lower water, light pink also works real well. For high water I’ll use a larger worm, size #10 or #8 tied with large brown chenille wrapped around the hook with the ends left real long off the front and back. Don’t be shy with this one make it pretty big.

In the water you describe, my favorite is the Conehead Combo. Directions are on my Web at:

It is also in the fly of the week section here on FAOL, from the 2nd quarter of 2005.

Peter f,
Do you find that fly better than the wooly bugger? It looks like a fluffy wooly bugger. I’ve never caught a trout on a wooly bugger, of course, I haven’t caught many trout. They just aggreviate me. I’m probably doing sometime wrong. What’s the best presentation for your fly?
