Well I have an interesting problem.
After my last trip I washed out my boots and let them dry like always and the next morning I woke up and was greeted with a most unpleasant (i.e. Horrible) moldy/mildewy smell which I cant seem to get rid of…
any ideas?!?
I’ve used lysol on mine(insides) when they start stinking like mildew, and it hasn’t hurt them(that I can tell).
Could it be that our waters here in Michigan are so clean and clear that we don’t have a “Stinky” problem!!??
Just kidding guy’s. Thanks for the heads up and advice.
 Made me do it!!
Look for a scuba dive shop in your local area. Most dive shops carry a special soap used to get the stink out of neoprene wet suits. Worked well on my waders and neoprene booties.
9 parts water, 1 part chlorine bleach. Will cure what stinks and should not cause discoloration.
White Vinigar is also useful, full strength, then rinse with water.
Mr. McGarthwaite,
Those concoctions taste TERRIBLE…but they DO cure what stinks and only cause minor discoloration.
Oops! Sorry.
Once you have followed others advice, you can avoid a recurrence of the problem in a couple of ways.
-
prop the boots up next to a dehumidifier so that air can circulate all around them until they dry. Loosen the laces and pull the tongue outward to facilitate drying.
-
if your clothes dryer has an “air dry” feature, consider putting your clean boots on the rack and letting the dryer run for a while. Ours will blow air without tumbling so you can dry sweaters flat, for instance.
If yours won’t do that, you can jerry rig a mesh bag to the inside of the door and let the dryer run until the boots are dry. I would not recommend high heat for the sake of any rubber or elastic elements in the boots.
- a hint for us girlies: spray the insides of the boots and the outside of your stocking feet with a mixture of 2/3 cups of vodka, 15 drops lavendar essential oil and 10 drops of lemon essential oil. For more powerful stank use tea tree, eucalyptus and or manuka.
