I have been trying all manner of Wonder Wing type flies.
A mono winged fly. Sort of a thorax version which better balances, perhaps. V notched hackle.
Byron, If you want a real challenge try this. The wing is tied in in two parts. What I came up with when I went through a similar phase. You can tie it double for show or single for fishing.

Beautiful. I have tried that before, but not a foam body.
Alan ties a beautiful WonderWing fly pattern with a foam extended body. I took his concept and tried to apply it to a size 16 “standard” dry fly. The hackle is within the wing.
They appear to very easily damaged. How long will one last?

I believe you are right. Have just tied some and not fished yet. Will in June. I’m sure a coating of fingernail clear coat will/would help to some extent.
However, where I fish (Henry’s Fork in Idaho), there are times when the fish are so picky that you would gladly use a fly only once just to get a take. Secondly, I have pulled the wings accidentally and they then become divided hackle barbule wings…
Do you think that style of wing would twist a 7x tippet? I have been thinking about tying some of these but didn’t want to make some up in smaller sizes then find out that they will twist up my tippet.

I think not on a size 16 or 18.

Yes they can be delicate, a drop of varnish at the tie in points of the wings helps a lot. As for twist yes if you use two wings. For most fishing flies I use just one. It doesn’t seem to matter.

helps to use a stiffer tippet to. got to remember when a lot of the larger wing styles came about ie; fan wings and such the only tippet was stiff mono or cat gut or horse hair.
Just apply head cement to the outside edges/barbules of each wing. If you apply to the whole wing, you’ll impede airflow and cause leader twist.
A fish’s teeth could tear a barbule. After each fish, just check out the fly. If a barbule has become detached at one end or another, simply snip it off.
If you use the the “divide by 3” or “divide by 4” rules, you’ll be fine.
