Hey all, been cruzing the net and haven’t been able to find a good pattern for a little trip this February to Eastern Oregon. Thinking something like a black Stimmy or a Chernobyl Ant with a few modifications. Any recommendations w/ recipe or a pic would be great. Can usually pic apart what is used by pics if no recipe is available. I just haven’t found much out there.
Black foam egg-sac (helps with floatation), body of olive adhesive-backed Furry Foam, ribbed with yellow Uni-stretch, underwing made of a strip (wide as hook gap) of weed-block fabric (you could sub something like Web Wing), olive hair wing and bullet-head, barred pumpkin/green Sili Legs and yelow foam indicator; tied these on #8-10 2xl dry hooks. Don’t know what the colors of the bugs are in Oregon, these went to John Scott to try over in MT, he said they were a decent match; pics of some of the bugs I’ve seen from Washington were a lot darker.
Thanks all for the spelling lesson and the great ideas. On the Owyhee I believe there a bit darker almost black, from what I’ve heard. Still open for some more ideas because with these short days I start work when it’s dark and usually get done at dusk, and weekends I’m usually stuck there at least one day. So the vise is the vice.
I haven’t fished the Owyhee hatch, but the Skwalas I have seen out here are very dark as you say. The abdomen is almost black and the thorax is more golden. They also seem to have very long tails and antennae. Maybe a different subspecies than the ones in the Rockies?
