Spruce Moth Pattern

Does anyone care to share a Spruce Moth pattern with me? I’m going out west in August and I just need something simple, like a guide’s pattern.
Thanks,
Bruce

a large tan elk hair caddis ought to work.

see here for more info http://www.westfly.com/entomology/others/spruce-moth.shtml

Thanks for the the threads.

I saw that article in one of the fly fishing magazines, and thought a CDC & Elk would work. They are a lot easier to tie than the EHC.

Jim

Probably any appropriate sized tan caddis pattern would work.

Dang it, I had never looked at the CDC and Elk, now I have to tie some looks easy and very bugy

Eric

Like Jim said, a #12-14 CDC & Elk will work well and is easy to tie. Check out Kelly Galloup’s Butch Caddis video on the Weekly Fly site, too (if it’s not still on the main page, just do a search):

These are simple to tie, too and should float like corks. If the spruce moths are as thick as they were last year (saw some really impressive “emergences” in/around YNP) you could be in for some epic fishing. I caught some cutts in one mountain stream that were stuffed with them; actually there were so many moths on the water, I had a tough time getting fish to bite.

Scott

Don’t forget, use powder floatant for the CDC, and if the moths are that thick, I’d recommend some orange yarn on the top to make it stick out amongst the herd so you can see it!

Jim

That Butch Caddis is great. Would you use a tan z-long tail and underwing and a tan body for the Spruce Moth tied in a size 12?

That should work; tie some #14s, too.

Scott

As seen here…VERY easy to tie…A quick Guide pattern in whatever color you prefer
