The original Voigtl?nder company was founded in 1756 as a maker of scientific instruments. Peter Wilhelm Friedrich Voigtl?nder, the grandson of the founder, helped develop the first mathematically computed lens (f/3.7!) in 1840, and also designed an equally incredible camera to use the lens. Camera production was a major part of the business for more than a century. Zeiss bought Voigtl?nder in 1956, and the production of Zeiss Ikon Voigtl?nder cameras ended with the demise of the Zeiss camera business in 1972. In 1997, Ringfoto GmbH acquired rights to Voigtl?nder and relaunched the company. They continue to market the Voigtl?nder Bessa-L and Bessa-RF, excellent cameras with outstanding optics certain to be sought-after collectibles in the future.
Joe,
Thank you for the info. Maybe it’s “off to the antiques Road Show” to get an idea of value. It is a bit “rough” though. I also sent the pic to a very dear friend in CA who is very knowledgeable in things photography . I asked him “what do I have here”. His rather stoic response was " An old camera".
It’s best to do your own research, even with a “Dear Friend” providing such wisdom. It would be interesting to see if it still is usable when cleaned up. If I owned that piece it would remain as a piece of family history. You cannot put a price on that.
geez Joe! little smart alec. y’always gotta make the rest uv us’ns look like a buncha STOOPID peoples by doin all yer research first!
i gotta hand it to you though, it seems like you really do do some research before making any comments on here. not to many people do that. if only we could get the people who are supposed to represent us to do that as well…
First, let’s get something straight. I’m NOT a “little smart alec.” I’m a 235# smart alec!:p:p
I’ll let you in on a little secret that makes me look smarter than I really am. I simply put names or phrases into Google, and pick what looks intelligent to me on the first page. I almost always have a separate window open in my browser just to Google subjects. It’s the modern day answer to reading encyclopedias without having to lift the heavy books. It’s amazing how much you can learn online, and I happen to enjoy research.
Joe
P.S. Thanks for the left handed compliment.

Don’t waste your time. Apparently when they came to Nashville some local collectors took things and played dumb. According to word on the street, the best offer was about half of the value of the items that were appraised. It seems that they pick a few items to rate highly. From what I have heard, some of the appraisers there will then make low ball appraisals and offer to buy things for those prices. No first hand knowledge on my part, strictly heresay, friend-of-a-friend, etc… But it is something to keep in mind.
Looks like a nice camera. Is it digital? How many Megapixels?
just kidding. We saved a bunch of older cameras from my father inlaw who was a camera buff. Gave them to my daughter who is a kprofessional photographer. She doesn’t use them often, but they are very kpretty adorning the shelves in her living room.
Jed,
Currently it’s a “plate” format but according to some library research, it is convertible to a film. It is in a non restorable condition but looks “interesting” on the fireplace mantle ( away from heat) next to my first camera of 1953 , an Ansul.
