spare rod

I just returned home from a 4hr.round trip to the catskills (delaware river) without making a sinlge cast. while walking down to the river i tripped over a stump and broke the tip of my rod. My qustion is how many of you carry a spare rod with you when your on a trip say 100 miles away from home and also what extra gear do you carry? thanks

I carry at least one extra rod…most often more.

Extra gear? Just whats in my vest (I use a sholder bag) and a rain jacket.

…you don’t carry a concealed back-up…?

I never leave to go fishing without at least 2 rods and a bag of reels too.

3wt 7’6 with me on the stream and and 8’6 3wt, 8" 5-6wt in the truck along with a few extra fly’s, tippets, hemos and a 1st aid kit in the truck.

Always have a spare available, in the car if not in my backpack.

Yep. Got a spare in the rig, be it the boat or the car.
…lee s.

I always have a spare rod if I am farther than 5 min from my house. I havent always and have been burned a couple of times.

I never leave home without an extra. And just incase something really bad happens I have an ultra light spinning rod with a bubble for throwing flies in my tool box.

My God, How many times does it have to be said to carry the rod pointed backwards when walking on a trail.

JC, I wait untill I get at the waters edge before putting my rod together!

Trail…rod lined up with leader and a fly attached. When walking, hold the rod in yor hand with the tip pointed backwards away from you…Brad Pit bounded down the trail with the pointy end forward? Whaaa, whine, why can’t I? ( tounge n cheek)
In my truck, in tubes, behind the front seat are always a 8.5 bamboo and a 6 ft Phillipson glass rod. In a canvas (trap shootgun shell carrier) are 4 reels with line attached. I am ready, but not because I might brake a tip but because I might want to share the day or use something approiate for the conditions. It is not important how many rods I have or reels, just that I am ready Freddy for the moment.

Rocky - Sorry ole man, I skipped right over your post. BUMP Do you remember those clear bobbers you could add water to to give weight for casting (they went a mile) and the subsurfaced with a fly to give that slow retreive natural look? Yes, I have stooped to the Mitchell 300 level and towed in a few nice cutts on log ponds in the coastal Oregon streams in my day. They Mountain Shop in NE Portland in the late 70’s was a Dan Bailey dealer, Hardy and Phillipson. I remember going in one Summer day and seeing Dan Bailey size 12 dry Mosequito flies on sale at $4.00 a dozen, I think I bought half a gross. They were killers with the clear bobber, not to mention the fly rod as well. We learned how to do it, we learned there was a better way and here we are…no more clear bobbers.

Well, my rod has an extra tip (bamboo), so I’ve got that covered. Other extras I carry: spare filter for my water bottle, spare compass (in case I lose the one in my vest), some spare flies in the off chance I lose a bunch in the trees/on rocks, and as of this last week (after a thorough soaking this last time out)- a spare set of clothes. You know, it really amazes me, with graphite rods being used for such a long time now, why on earth are these rod companies not selling their rods with a spare tip?

After concluding a backup is an absolute must, convincing oneself to buy that new rod gets much easier…

Always have my Cabelas 8 ft., five-piece, 5 weight in the car or truck. A hundres miles from home I always have two, different weight rods along. You never know what will happen!

I usually have another rod with me. Usually 2 wts. lighter or heavier. Except for a recent purchase I can’t afford 2 rods of the same weight so I go every other weight and use that as my spare.

When I’m out I bring 2 rods and 2 reels. Nothing worse than getting all prepped for a good day fishing and have it screwed up due to a gear problem. I have however on occasion forgotten my extra spools, and then been stuck fishing one depth.
Actually sometimes I feel that I go overboard with all the different things I bring along. ( Hmm I might need this though I used it once in 7 years )

Jonezee I still have one of those clear bubbles from my days as a kid. Always had my best luck with the bubble and a Cow Dung fly fishing the little creeks that run thru the farmers fields around here.

Rocky

I can’t remember the last time we left home with less than 6 rods for the three of us (and 6-10 reels)

I can honestly say that the spares have come in mighty handy for OTHER anglers who have broken, lost, forgotten rods … Or also come up against gale force winds … a 4 wt in hand.

As for other “backup” gear, … that’s another thred waiting.
