Hey guys,
I am going to be in Boulder next week and just wanted to beg for some input on where to fish. I know South Boulder Creek runs real close to the lodge we will be staying and and was wondering if it is fishable this time of year.
I am not sure if it will be open or not. It depends on what the weather is like the week before and how high up on the creek you are. The big thompson will be open in Estes which is about 45 minutes from Boulder
Thanks Allstar! The Big Thompson is my main river if the South Boulder isn’t fishable that or the drive to the South Platte. What would you use this time of year on the Big Thompson or South Boulder??
I think you will do better on the Thompson this time of year. South Boulder tends to cool down faster. The Big Thompson just below the dam and for the first few miles downstream will stay warmer longer. I stopped fishing South Boulder by November when the water temp went below 38 degrees F.
For the Big Thompson use small things. Midges around size 22. I was there just after Christmas and they were rising to a small hatch of midges. I got a couple on a size 22 Griffiths Gnat. If they aren’t rising then zebra midges or brassies or anything like that.
