Does anyone know a good source of thick plastic bags… say 6 or 7 mil that I could buy in a quantity of 2 dozen or fewer? Also… a source of rigid plastic sheeting that I could put into those bags.
I’m thinking of making my own storage bags for a travel fly tying set-up similar to the Fly Hive bags.
I use the “Hefty one zip” bags.
They are pretty heavy and have the
slider on them.
To keep them rigid, I place a piece
of cardboard in them (the kind that
comes with new shirts.)
They come in many sizes and work great.
Can even hold a full neck without having
to bend or fold it. The card board sheet
keeps the whole thing rigid.
Diane;
What about laminating sheets for the sheeting? Even laminate 2 sheets with nothing in them? Pretty rigid!!
6 or 7 mill bags have to be out there!
I assume (Hoo Boy!) that you want to use the rigid plastic for dividers in the bags.
Heavy duty Freezer Zip Lock Bags?
Not familar with the Fly Hive Bags but you’ve got me thinking!!
Fit the Laminating sheets to the 1 gal. freezer bag, 3 hole punch and a large zippered or closable note book. Hmmm!!!
Saw something like that in the local $ store!!
Sure and now you’ve got me off on another project!!
I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here!
I am not familiar with the bags you are referring to, but I have used the freezer grade bags in the quart, 1 gallon and 2 gallons sizes for some heavy duty uses. I use the 2 gallon bags to pack my clothes in for backpacking and I can use them several times before they have any holes in them. They seem to be sturdy enough for packing lots of things. The 2 gallon size are plenty big and are in the grocery stores.
As for the plastic sheets, I assume you want them rigid, craft stores have plastic sheets for various uses. If that fails, try a hobby store that sells plastic models or a model railroad store. Hobbist use various types of plastic for modelling, but the price will be a little higher in the hobby stores. Instead of plastic, will a paper product work like a sturdy shirt card board?
Not sure if you can find them that thick in that small of quanity any where. I have seen places selling 6 MM plastic ziplocks in many diffrent shipping supply houses but they are always in boxes of 1000 each in smaller sizes and 500 each for bigger sizes.
If you find smaller batches somewhere let me know because I looked awhile back and found no smaller quanities and they wanted $79 for 3"x4" per box of 1000 to $159 for 8"x10" box of 1000. the boxes of 500 each started at $99 for 9" X 12" to $161 for 12" X 15". None of these prices included shipping.
As you can see I had the same type of thought as you. But I found the cost of the bags to high to bother with and gave up the thaught.
Maybe you will have better luck then I did.
You may have to buy 1000 but the prices are pretty good. I buy and use the 7 mil bags myself for storage.
As far as plastic sheeting goes; how thick, how big? Old milk cartons have been useful to me for certain things. You can also buy sheets of plastic at craft stores that is used for embroidery. It comes in sheets but has small square holes in it. I don’t know if that matters or you are just trying to use it as a stiffener in the bags.
Rigid Styrene sheets in thicknesses of .005, .010 inches etc are available from hobbyshops carrying model railroad model materials. It comes in clear and white.
I suggest that you visit ne of the big office supply stores. They have all sorts of plastic filing systems. You may even find something better than what you now have in mind.
They have everything plastic and they are in my area. Some things can be bought in smaller quanties at their retail outlet. If there is something you want, I can check and see if I can get it in less than case lots. Just let me know.

Diane, I have not found a problem with the regular zipper type zip locs as far as thickness is concerned.
Jack, I do use a 3 ring punch but do not punch the bag per se…fearing that the opening could allow critters to have access…so I go to the trouble to staple on folded pieces of manila folder and punch the folder…then hold all together with split ring binder rings…3 ring note books are to limiting for me and take up space of their own.
Diane…a good inexpensive supply of stiffing sheets is cut up Manila folder…but again I find no need…and I store full necks.
You might try looking in an office supply store for the heavy plastic zip pouches used in a day planner. They come in 8 1/2 by 11 inch size and are made of heavy plastic probably in the 10 mil range with a zip lock top that would make it easy to get at your materials. They are usually sold individually and you could put them in a large notebook to make organization simple.
I know the one I use in my day planner has lasted for several years even though it’s over filled with all sorts of “stuff”.
Just a thought…
