Source for Punch embroidery yarn?

Anyone use this yarn as a tying material? A couple of others tyers have mentioned they use a Perfect Punch yarn for various patterns but I can’t seem to find anything similar? Did a search of FAOL and found nothing? What patterns do you tye with this?

Tim

Here is my source for Punch Yarn. I experiment with most flies I tie that take dubbing. I use punch in them. It is easy to use and looks real buggy. Hope this helps. John

Here’s a punch yarn pattern on this site:

Al Campbell also wrote other articles about flies using punch yarn.

Check out his entire “too simple” series.

I bought punch yarn on e bay. Apparently it is yarn that is used in a special type of embroidery. My local AC Moore and Jo Ann Fabrics gave me blank stares when I asked about it.

If you want a few yards of a number of colors send me a pm.

Tim,
I don’t know if you have a Hobby Lobby in your area, but around here they have literally hundreds of colors of punch yarn. Too many, in fact. It confuses me on which shades to get.
Joe

From the pictures in the article, the Punch yarn looks more “fuzzy” than other embroidery yarn. Is that the appeal?

I don’t know why this website connot handle copy and paste addresses.
:?

The subject has been talked about fairly extensively, but I couldn’t get the search to provide results, either. Journeyman, if you send me a PM with your mailing address, I’ll send you a few feet of several colors to play with. In the meantime, here are some links that might help.

Here is a link to photos of a punch yarn swap we did a while back. Sorry the picture quality wasn’t the best, but you get the idea.

I ordered most of mine from pretty punch. They are very nice and the service was great.

Thanks to everyone for the great responses, if I can find it at Hobby Lobby then maybe I’ll have what I need? Will check this out, as far as the “Too Simple” patterns, which seem to fish the best?

Tim

Tim,
If your Hobby Lobby has as many different colors as the one I go to does, you will, seriously, be confused on which of the 10 different shades of, for example, pale yellow you want.
Joe

All: I looked at thg the Punch Yarn site and there are different kinds of punch yarn such as acrylic, lustre, metallic, etc. Which kind did Al use? If someone wants to sell some I’d be glad to buy a little. 200 Yards is a lot of yarn.

Purr-fect Punch LUSTER yarn is what I’ve seen included in various pattern sheets? Are we all talking about the same product?

Tim

He used…acrylic.

FYI, prettypunch is running specials of 20 spools for $12 and 40 for $20. You can’t choose the colors, but you should get a huge variety pretty cheap.

what brand name is it found under at hobby lobby? I’ve got one right down the street from my house.

mgj

mgj,
I let a buddy borrow all of mine so I don’t have it with me, but it seemed like it may have been DMC? I can’t be sure, however. Last time I was there and bought some they came in something like 9 or 10 yard lengths and they were on sale for 6 for $1.
Joe

I’m interested in the brand at Hobby Lobby also. I looked at the one by my house. Lot of emroidery thread but I don’t remember any punch yarn. I finally found some in a small needle point craft shop. The ladies that worked there were amused.

I may be a little slow on the uptake but I’m still uncertain as to just what the subject material is.
Is there a brand name associated with it?
Does it come spooled, on a card or in some other way?
How much material is there when you buy a unit and what is the approximate price?
Is it a single “rope” or is it composed of 2, 4, 6 or some other number of finer strands?
We aren’t talking about those little ~ $0.25 skeins of DMC thread are we?
Is it agreed that the right material is made of acrylic?
Is punch embroidery yarn anything like Uni-Yarn? (I use and like Uni-Yarn.)

I hate to be a pest but the specifics have been elusive.

Thanks

What I have to use is Purr-fect punch yarn. Acrylic yarn in 225 yard little cones.

Rick

It’s not the same as the DMC stuff as far as I know. It’s slightly fuzzy and 100% acrylic. More info (and a source for it online) can be found at:

It makes quick and easy dubbing for small flies. The stuff I has is made of two strands so for really tiny flies, I sometimes seperate the strands and use just one…
