Snowshoe October Caddis

along the line of the CDC Flav here is a caddis built in a similar manner

THE WING IS CDC, THE BODY IS BURNT ORANGE DEER LOOPED, THE THORAX IS DARK DUN SNOWSHOE LOOPED AND WOOD DUCK HORNS.
YOU CAN SUB DARK DUN DEER FOR THE WING.

bones,
I love this fly! Did you originate the pattern?
Doug

Boy is that a loaded question :-)… but as far as I know, yes.
I’m toying with the idea tying these flies for the store as specials… no spam intended

Tutorials on your website, maybe?
Joe

I spent a while searching my posts for the deer hair scud pattern I posted a while back, but no luck finding it.
What do you think of switching out the wood duck horns to a man made material??
Just curious, do you manually cut up the deer hair for dubbing or put it inot a coffee grinder?
Thanks,
Doug

I may, time has become very hard to come by as of late… it is a doable thing though

I cut the deer manually, a grinder works but sometimes I want the longer fibers to trim at the end. I use Wood Duck because it is soft and does not get entangled with the tippit as much say fibbets or even moose. This help reduce the tippit twist

Harry,

This may be a dumb question, but what do you mean by the term looped in the use of tying material?

Never mind, I get it now. Hey it’s Monday.

WOW i love this fly to!
its awesome.
i will try the dubbing loop deer hair tonight.

Great photographs, could you tell us a little about the lens and lighting?

FK

a stock Nikon CoolPix 990 three florescent lamps, a blue backdrop…and

the phone off the hook, the wife out shopping, the cat outside, the radio turned off, a pot of coffee and few hours to sit and fiddle  oh yes the picture cost me two blouses and a pair of shoes…free time… well , isn?t

I like that fly.

I tie one quite similar, Snowshoe hare for the wing too, though.

It also works great for a low riding midge/ crane fly pattern:

Its hard to beat snowshoe hare… My top material to use!!
