Snapping Turtle Feeding

okay, I wasn’t sure if I should put this here or elsewhere, but opted for WW since he is more of a warm water guy.

My co-worker found a snapping turtle about 2 week ago in our parking lot. We built it a ‘habitat’ and promtly made him our team mascot. We even set up an internal web-cam so we can keep tabs on him.

Well, yesterday was live food feeding day, so we recorded the process. Man, he downs 12 minnows (shiners for those interested) in less than 10 minutes! It is a site to behold! If you right-click on the link and choose save tatget as (for IE users) you can download the 10Mb video to watch again and again.

OOOOPPPPS! Had to change the link. It now takes you to a page with a link to the feeding movie. It is titled “Spike TV - First Feeding” That should work.

Enjoy!

It looks like he got full near the end of the video. I never knew they were that quick and accurate. Pete

Don’t go wet wadin necked around snappin turtles. Might lose somethin impotant

Every day that I wake up and everything still works. Is a good day.

Facinating footage. He seems to launch his whole body and his accuracy is fantastic. I actually caught my first snapping turtle on a fly rod last week. This video explains how quick they are.

Thanks for sharing.

p.s It would really suck to be minnow in his tank - but not for long.

Don,
Thanks for sharing. Many years ago, a friend & I fished a pond that had an overabundance of small gills & a couple decent sized snappers. One day, a snapper was right in front of me in real clear water & I hooked a tiny gill & tossed it out. I THOUGHT the gill was too far from the turtle, but I sure got educated. Those babies are FAST!

any clues on how you guys can see this video. I’ve tried it with my home dial up and at work on DSL, and in neither place can I watch the video. I’m dying to see it. Well, that might be extreme, but you get the point. It just seems to sit there spinning with nothing ever coming up. JGW

John,
I had trouble too, then I got there by doing this:
1-on this page, click Spike Feeding
2-on his page, FIRST click First Feeding, THEN look down & click on the one that starts http…that worked for me.
Mike

Do I sell the float tube or buy chainmail leggins’? Not too many of those bad boys in the trout ponds I fish, but the bog ponds have some the size of manhole covers…Yikes!

Anyone know a place that sells Kevlar Waders, and Stainless Steel Long Johns…Ouch!

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot.

For anyone interested, there are two feedings posted now. one is 10MB, the newer one is only 5MB. Goes through about 15 minnows in 5 minutes in that second one.

We thought spike would save some for later, but no dice, he chased them all down. Even the smart one that kept hiding underneath him.

PS, if you have the space, I can e-mail it to you. You know, Gmail or empty hotmail account or whatever.

Crud! Gonna have to have my cow-irker check his server.

Here are links directly to the files. His server does not allow you to save them from her, however.

Turtle Feeding 1[/url:9d030]
Turtle Feeding 2[/url:9d030]

And if you’d rather copy and paste the links:
http://www.spratland.com/videos/feeding.wmv[/url:9d030] http://www.spratland.com/videos/feeding2.wmv[/url:9d030]

Man, I gotta get my own server up. This would be so much easier.

Don

thanks for the fixee Don

and thank that cow-irker as well

I’m destined to never see Spike feed. Just exactly how long should it take for this to download on DSL? Ten minutes? I’ve let 'er sit for five minutes doing something else and it was still a blank page. JGW

My buddy has a snapping turtle that he found as a baby a few years ago. That thing is great. Make sure you feed it a well balanced diet. We feed his turtle, which is about 4-5 inch shell diameter now, minnows, pinkies(baby mice), adult mice, crickets, worms, and etc. He can’t wait until it gets big enough to feed it chickens. Two years ago we saw a huge snapper take down a full grown canadian goose at a local pond. It was pretty awsome. The turtle had a shell diameter of 3-4 feet and claws that looked like fingers.

Turtles are great pets, low maintenance, good personality and a bad temper. I do think though that it is illegal to keep native fauna as pets so I would keep the advertisements minimal. My buddy keeps talk about his to a minimum. I say this just as a warning

re: the wmv file

white43, how fast is your dsl service? A slow dsl connection may only be 2 times the speed of a fast dialup. Try the smaller file (2) and give it a chance.

drolfson, good footage and a good lesson in how fast a snapper is!

Why is your friend trying to stop people from saving the file with the right click? That doesn’t prevent anyone from saving it. Windows Media Player automatically saves the file to the viewers hard disk in a temp folder. All a person has to do to keep it, is copy it from that folder before closing Media Player and save it anywhere on their hard disk.

Joe

Well, yuo know what they say Joe, “A lock is to keep the honest people honest. The dishonest people will get in anyway.”

Actually, I think that it just has something to do with the setup somewhere. We really don’t care who gets the video.

Glad you all liked it.

Nick; HE gets some shrimp and green pellets (some sort of turtle food from the pet store) between the minnow feedings. We may have to try a mouse one of these days. Just gotta figure out how to catch some. Maybe a stick over a 5Gal bucket with penut butter in the middle.

Right now he is about as big around as a salad plate, but has grown in the last month since we ‘caught’ him.
