Snail Patterns

I am interested in tying up some snail patterns. Yes, I know, not the typical trout type patterns. Want some for carp but bluntly haven’t seen many different styles of snail patterns even though I have chased carp fairly seriously for a number of years. Want to open my options up for areas where I have located feeding fish. So if you have seen something that you are willing to share or even a link, it would be appreciated.

One of the best snail patterns I’ve used is the Renegade dry fly. Use it either as a dry, floating pattern or sink it. You will be surprised at the results.

Thanks, those couple look pretty neat so far.

Years ago when trout in the Muskegon River had snails in their stomachs I used a weighted soft hackle fly with a thick dubbed body of muskrat or hares ear.

Hi,
I’ve seen a snail pattern in one of my New Zealand pattern books (forget what it’s called). As I recall, it was basically just peacock herl body, black hackle (dry), with a curl of peacock sword as a topping. I’ve not tried it myself. If I can find it and remember, I’ll post the name and verify (or correct) the dressing.

Henry Hoffman tied these three snail flies for a special FFF fly plate in 2009.

Ralph Cutter has a good one, and solid research behind it

Those are all some cool patterns everyone. I actually went away for a couple of days and did some preseason scouting of some trout water, season opens in a week for the early catch and release stuff. My wife had the snow snows on and I was busting through some knee deep stuff but I saw lots of fish in some clear water. Can’t wait to wet a line.
