Smokey Mountains Labor Day Weekend - Pics

My son and I went to the Smokey Mountains fishing this weekend. We caught 18 rainbows and a bunch of creek chub over the weekend. The mountains, as always are beautiful and the fishing was pretty good considering how warm and dry it has been there this summer.

Here are some photos of our trip. I only took photos of a couple fish as I didn’t want to stress them out any more than necessary.

This is a boulder field we crawled up, over, and around. This was a rough stretch of water. We caught a couple nice rainbows there.

This is a video my son shot of my casting “technique”. I was trying to get a dry fly up under an overhanging tree. I didn’t know he was filming me.

This is a “micro trout”. I don’t know how he fit the fly in his mouth…

This is a very pretty little chub. I don’t know what kind they are, but they were nearly as pretty as the trout.

This is pretty typical of the higher elevation water we were fishing.

My son was looking at some butterflies that were eating something off of a rock. There were hundreds of these black and blue butterflies all over the park this weekned. Some trails they looked like leaves falling from the trees. They would light on your hat as you walked through. Pretty cool.

Thanks for looking.

Jeff

That’s a pretty big net you got there. Looks like a neat place to fish.

 Nah, the net is the normal size… it’s the fish that makes it look big.

Jeff

Very nice, Beautiful pictures.

What streams were you fishing?
I made my first trip their this summer and loved it.

That minnow is a Warpaint Shiner. They are identified by the stripe on their head.

Duncan

Thanks for the report. It is so nice to read real reports from real people instead of some of the stuff in magazines. Well done.

Hi Jeff!

Got yor e-mail regarding the trip and just couldn’t wait to come to FAOL and see the post. Sounds like (and looks like) you had a great time. I love fishing those small mountain streams. Reminds me of home in Western PA and some of the streams I fish in West Virginia.

I’ve had the same experience with chubs during low water conditions on these streams a well. Sorry to hear we won’t see you at BV until the end of the month. Doesn’t look like I’ll make it to Friendship next weekend. But thanks for the invite to stop in camp.

Keep me in the loop, thanks again for the “Smokies” report. Good shooting, keep your powder dry and see you later in September.

Austin,
We were fishing mainly in the littel river. The majority of the fish we caught were in the West Prong of the Little River up by Treemont.

We also fished the West Prong of the Piegon river and Walker’s Camp Prong up the Newfound Gap road. Caught a couple up there but climbing over the boulders in the mid elevations (Chimney’s Picnic Area) got pretty tiring and the upper level water was not producing consistently enough to stick with it.

My son is only 12 and by the time we made it up to Walker’s Camp, he was tired and hungry so we didn’t fish up there more than 45 minutes or so.

Duncan, thanks for the info on the warpaint shinner.

Jeff

Jeff,
A fine report and fishing trip with your son. I could see me in that vid. of you trying to get underneath some branches. I did that same thing yesterday.

You’re doing what every dad’s son wants their dad to do and that’s what it’s about! Nice job.

Jeremy.
