Smoke alarm works

I learned 2 things cooking lunch today.

 1. the Smoke Alarm Works
 2. one can take “extra crispy” a little too far.

Been there, done that.

There nothing like having a low battery in a detector that is mounted 14ft up on the side of the wall 3:00am in the morning, none stop beeping and no ladder handy to shut the D**E thing off. After going into the garage and getting a 6ft step ladder I was like Spiderman standing on the top step of the ladder glued to the side of the wall reaching up for the detector. I learned a lesson, always change the batteries every 6 months in the daytime.

Now that is a rude awaking!!!

Jeff,

So “blackened” something was on the menu today? Sorry about your lunch. I have to keep reminding my 17 year old daughter that it pays to pay attention when your cooking and that walking away from the stove is a recipe for failure. Hopefully, the only damage was to the meal (and your pride)? Sorry about the bad luck!

I’ve been worrying about the smoke detectors going off lately too.
I often tie a few flies after my family retires to their beds. Last week I was tying some Thiefs with black chenille for the head…and for some reason thought it would be a good idea to singe back some fibers or chenille that had crowded the eye of the hook just a wee bit. I brought the lighter flame close to the chenille head of the fly…and the whole thing immediately combusted. I put the raging fireball out immediately, but I could smell the smoke. And there is a smoke detector on the ceiling directly above my fly-tying desk. I was afraid it would go off and wake up my family!
Now…I was afraid the fly was ruined, but the head is still black, just a little smaller and less “fluffy”. I’ll let the fish tell me if they like it better or worse than an un-charred version. Speaking of which… after that bout of brilliance, I tried to be more careful with a 2nd Thief…but it lit up like a torch bathed in ether too. I put it out even quicker than the first (cuz I was ready!). Doesn’t look too bad.

i live in a mobile home and have 5 detectors from one end to the other. when one battery gets low they all get low and when one goes off they all go off. extra dark toast is just enough to set them off! what a bleeping concert!

I knew I liked kbproctor for some reason

Mmmm, I like extra crispy! Three times this last winter the smoke alarms went off, and when one goes, they all go. Then the challenge is finding which one started it all. Of course it only happens at 2:37 in the durned a.m.! Sure does get me out of bed quick - almost quicker than an early morning fishing trip!

Kelly.

<Old Technology Alert: information following might be out of date.>
Most smoke detectors don’t actually detect smoke. They are designed to detect heated ions. This means that, theoretically, your cigarettes won’t set them off but your smoldering furniture will.

Ed

Since ya’ll brought it up; Daylight saving starts in about 2 weeks, time to change the batteries in your detectors.

Since Ed wants you to be correct the NFPA says they are smoke alarms; detectors are connected to a system, alarms can stand alone.

So “blackened” something was on the menu today?

Joe,
Well, umm, hmm, uhhh, yes.

It was supposed to be a plate of buffalo style chicken rolls.

Unfortunately, it ended up being more like charcoal bricquettes.

I preheated my toaster oven to 425 just as the instructionns said
I even read the directions (first mistake) and set the timer. Directions said - 6-8 minutes so that’s what I set.

Unfortunately, this is where human error set in.

The timer went off in 6 minutes as it was supposed to.
I was in the middle of writing a report for work
I smelled smoke some point later

oops.

Fog or mist has been known to set off our alarms in the past…when there was no fire, smoke, or elevated heat present. Anybody else have that happen?

No but it sounds like you have them in your sauna room :D

Well…no sauna, but my wife’s pretty hot (are you reading this, HONEY??) LOL

With Our’s opening the oven door set’s them off, or having 3 pan’s on the stove going:lol:

If a spider walks across the plane of the detector, at 2:00AM, the alarms (detectors) will ALL go off too! I believe it causes the spider to go deaf, and it doesn’t move!
I learned where the panel was in the garage to flip the switch/breaker to the detectors to shut them off long enough for them to re set. AFTER making sure there was NO fire ANYWHERE in the house. My son is not always available to provide rescue!

Nothing as elaborate as a spider. Mine was just from some extra crispy lunch in the toaster oven.

I guess it is comforting to know the things do work.

When our kids were a lot younger, they would invaribly ask Mom to read a story while she was cooking supper, , smoke alarm goes off.
Now days when she is cooking, one of them still manages to call, she has gotten better, smoke alarm only goes off every fifth or sixth time.

Now, however, if there is bacon involved, she has learned that the microwave doesn’t set it off as OFTEN when cooking the bacon.
It will still do it if you forget and set the time too long while talking with one of the girls, granddaughters included.

Just hope nobody is in the room above!!!
