Small Reels?

Ok,
So I have a VERY nice, super short 5’6" 3Wt. rod. I’m looking to add a nice small lightweight reel to it without spending a ton of money. Any suggestions? I know that Bass Pro Shops ushers some pretty nasty comments from most users of this board, but I’ve seen a nice looking click and pawl reel, machined bar stock, and pretty darn small there that looks reely(pun intended) nice. Any opinions on this, or any other tiny reels to hold half of a new DT3F line and a bit of backing??

bwagner;
I have Phluger Medalist 1942 on my 6’6" 2 wgt. Somewere around 25 bucks at Cabela’s!

I’m with Jack. Love those Medalists.

wht diameter reel you thinking of and how much $?

A nice little J.R. Forbes reel would be the perfect match.

There was a write up in Flyfishing USA on ultra lite reels and rods. I can send it to you if you would like. It is very helpful and helped me with my rod and reel selection for brooktrout streams here in the Blue Ridge. Send me an email: p_potgieter@yahoo.com

will send to anyone whom may want it.

gardenfish…I’m not sure how small, just a nice quality little reel. I do however think I’d like something a little bit smaller than the Pflueger reels mentioned. Maybe something similar in size to the J.R. Forbes also mentioned. What did you have in mind?

do yourself a favor and get a used orvis battenkill 3/4 click pawl
i got one on my 6’6" 3wt

bwagner, I too was thinking of the J. Austin Forbes Magnesium. I checked overstock.com and they are sold out. Super reel, a delightful click and well made. ANother thought would be an Orvis Rocky Mountain 3/4 if you can find one. They have the spools much like the STH reels. I have one on one of my 3 wt. rods. You have a really fun task ahead of you. Enjoy!

The Galvan Standard 2.5 I just got one with a rod I purchased at a yard sale… its a tiny reel and is super quiet… virtually silent on the retrieve with a quiet click when the drag is pulled out. $170.00

On my 3 wt I use a small Orvis BK LA. It is so cool. I also like the CFO, which I use on my 4wt boo.

I picked up a cheap little crystal river cahill in size 1. It is a plastic reel with disc drag, and you can turn off the clicker. It is probably one of the lightest reels I’ve ever picked up, and I got it on ebay for under $20. I put mine on a Batson RX8 2 weight rod, and it makes a super light little rig. I haven’t seen the size 1 reels for a while, but the 2’s are everywhere.

Check out the Redington CT 2/3,IMHO the best value going in a light trout reel. Though they have been discontinued (a big mistake) you can find them on eBay for about $50. I’ve got a couple of them and love them, they are a very well made machined reel! They come in both black and silver, both of mine are silver. One is mounted on my Sage 279 LL and the other on an Orvis 7’-6" 3wt Superfine.

Tight Lines & SCREAM’N REELS!

I would definitely second the Galvan standard. Great reel, and light!

I agree with BH Spey. Another vote for the Redington CT 2/3. I fish one on my 8’ 3wt on the local streams and I love it. If ebay doesn’t pan out check the Traden Stuff site at [url=http://www.tradenstuff.com.:339cb]www.tradenstuff.com.[/url:339cb]

Ok,
another vote for the Medalist 1942, or if shiny things fascinate you(like they do me) Pflueger makes a small size Supreme.

In case you couldn’t guess from my username I use an Ovris CFO 123 for my 3WT cane. It’s an older click & pawl model, extremely light and I have been really happy with it. The drag adjustment is pretty useless but it is very smooth. I use it mostly on small streams where a big fish is a 10" brookie so the drag isn’t really an issue.

I use your name on my boo also, but I also use it on my Trout Bum. Great reel, landed a 22" brown in current with a size 32 dry on 6X tippet with my boo last Friday. Took awhile, but, got a good audience.

Take a look at the Teton Tioga 2. I just bought one for my 3 weight and it’s a thing of beauty!! There is another thread running about Teton’s, it some E-Bay info you might want to look up if your interested.

i just picked up a cfo 123, one of the last in the shop made in england. beautiful little reel!
