Skunk fur

How is skunk fur as a tying material…the white part or the black?
I think I’ve heard of it as a polar bear substitute.
Does it have any translucency? Fortunately I’ve never been close enough to tell.[G].

Excellent where applicable: tails; wings on streamers, steelhead, salmon, dries, wets. Not sure about underfur for dubbing. Good skunk is glossy and the white is somewhat transluscent. Because of it being glossy, it may be slippery too.

I find it excellent fur to tie with. You are right, the white fur is an excellent substitute for Polar Bear fur and the black fur makes nice streamer wings. The “black” fur is not really black but rather different shades of very dark brown. You can usually get skunk from Moscow Hide and Fur (hideandfur.com). Great folks to do business with.

Our skunk is black&white here in upstate NY and it is one of the few few animals that have naturally black hair. Not a good road kill candidate for those of you who supply yourselves along the highways.

That’s how I got mine… just be careful where you cut
