I’ve used as small as a #12 Mustad 3366 or 3399 to as large as a
Eagle Claw 2/0. I think that the longer shank hook makes a good looking & more effective fly. Tied a bunch on those gold Aberdeen type crappie hooks.
Like any other fly sometimes they do real good and sometimes other flies work better. I have a supply of about 200 of them in various sizes that I will be trying this summer.
Most on are a size 10 hook. I have some larger and some smaller than that.
Mostly Mustad 3366 or 3399.
Try different a sizes to see what works for you.
Rick I haven’t seen your pattern. Are you furling the boa yarn and picking it out attaching it to the hook like a tail then wrapping the hook with a piece of boa yarn? If so I tie that fly for bass on a 1/0 and have had good success.
I was reviewing the Boa Yarn Leach by Mr. Zieger, listed here, and reading this thread and though it would an interesting, and fairly simple, fly to tie and try out. Where do you get this Boa Yarn? Is this a craft type yarn?
I’ve tied them from size 14 to 1/0. Mort of them on 3x streamer hooks. Some on Gamakatsu crappie hooks too. For trout size s 10 and 8 seem to work the best. Warmater fish prefer them bigger. I might tie some 2/0 and 3/0 this summer.
Mickalo… A skein of this stuff goes on forever - heck 6 feet goes on forever!
I have “too much” ‘Mallard’ (olive/brown/gold), Carnival (pinkish/yellowish/orangish) and Black.
PM me your adress and I’ll send you some.
Check out some of the other yarns. In one of my ‘trades’, someone sent me couple feet of a “longer” lashed yarn. Black with silver accent. Not sure what it’s called but it makes a really nice fly. I’ve been able to find the black but not with the silver.
There is eyelash yarn that has longer fibers off the side and the fibers are about 1/8 as numerous as on the boa yarn. They make pretty good leeches also.
