Size 14's?!?

What do you tie for bass and panfish in size 14’s?

I tie a wooly buggers, mainly black. After the outting yesterday I don’t think I’ll need anything but the all-mighty wooly bugger. But, I need something new to tie. Panfish and bass are about all I’ll be fishing for.

Thanks a lot!
Shane

Tie up some foam bodied poppers, and/or, Wooly Worms on #14 hooks!?
WarrenP’s famous fly; “The Wow”… is an excellent fly when tied on a #14 hook and another he expertly ties, called “The Purple Pizazz” has been a GREAT pan fish fly for me so far, this Spring. He sent me some larger ones, than #14, but I copied them on a #14 and even a #16 and all 3, of the sizes, have been great producers.

any size, any color foam, any color rubber legs

Damsel fly and dragonfly nymphs.

Nothing! All my bluegill flies are #6, #8, #10. Keeps the little ones at bay. Smaller flies are just too much bother for the bluegills I am after. The little bluegills (< 8")will just pester you to no end.

fishbum

I am with fishbum…all my bluegill flies/poppers are #6-8-10

Try a Lil` Bugger. Rabbit tail and ostrich herl body. Works best on a 3xl or 4xl hook.

Improved McGinty from Ward Bean’s website!

Similar. The rabbit and ostrich make for a very active pattern. Tied white on white #10 4xl and a bead head makes for a great steelhead pattern.

Drift a bead head nymph by those bass when “they aren’t feeding”…like Trout, the drift must be clean but they’ll feed.

Thanks a ton for all the wonderful suggestions! I’ll do some searching tonight:)

Foam poppers on such small hooks? Sounds impossible, for me at least lol:)

What’s a clean drift? Though I wasn’t doing any drifting, I was fishing some wooly buggers the other day and landed some rock bass. But, I seen 2 smallies that measured at least 12". One sucked in my bugger and spit back out without skipping a beat. And the other I watched take the bugger, but I set the hook too soon I guess. Which is good, since they’re not in season. They’d have been released either way. But, they would have been a blast on the 2wt I was fishing.

Thanks again,
Shane

Some simple foam ants would probably do the trick as well…

Here’s another idea… http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/fotw2/070504fotw.php

OttoDita, i’ve done very well, on the smallies, with a plain old bead head hares ear, tied on a size 14 hook. They’re especially effective when the white flies are around. The panfish seem to like them, too.

Mini buggers for me. Peter’s pattern is a real killer on my local stream for smallies, pans and red eyes. One of my go to patterns, although I think the 12 is usually more productive than the 14.

The Briminator
The pattern is for a size 8 hook, but I tie them all the way down to a 14.
Brim and Bass both seem to love this thing, and it’s an easy tie.

Another fly I like for bream is a white rabbit “nymph” with a beadhead.
Hook: Size 10 to 14 standard dry fly or nymph hook. (with the beadhead, either works)
Head: Bead (I prefer gold, the fish may not care)
Thread: Red 6/0 or 8/0 wrapped on the entire hookshank.
Tail: White rabbit body hair (about a hook shank long)
Body: White rabbit dubbed lightly. (You want the thread to show thru when it’s wet)

The first time I tried this fly, I tossed it in the water while I pulled out my flyline. It was hit before I had 6 feet off of the reel.

Kirk

Kirk, can you post a picture of that White Rabbit nymph? It sounds pretty cool.

Tye up some GurglePops. It’s my panfish goto fly both as my initial catcher and floating indicator. Use your Buggers as your dropper fly and double your chances. Have also caught Bass on the same rig.

It took a little bit to get a decent shot. New camera, and I had to try several modes to get it close to right.

I tied this one this evening with a tungsten bead. Figured it was time to see if the fish cared.

If you don’t have any white rabbit fur, drop me a PM with your snail mail, and I’ll send you some. My darling bride found me a patch-work coat at Goodwill, so I have plenty. And then some.

Kirk

BTW This one is tied on a size 14 standard dry fly hook.

I have use 3x and 4x long hooks in size 14 for woolly buggers. I have also used them to tie small streamers, some with a wrap or two of dry fly hackle as a collar. Those have done well for me not only on brim, but also smallmouth.
