An article in the local paper this week talks about big browns taking mouse patterns. Night fishing if you can stay up late and brave the cold temps. Talked to a local shop and was told the prime fishing is after midnight.
One (mouse or vole?) was seen to fall into the water in the S-Bends a week ago and be taken by a fish in the middle of the day. A few seconds later it re-appeared at the surface and swam off … !! A friend of mine was the Sept volunteer at the cabin and he caught ( and released … C&R is good <g> ) over 40 mice from the cabin with a Hav-a-hart trap in the month.
The vole population is incredible this year. I was there a month or so and saw dozens every day scurrying about as I walked the trails.
Common method of night fishing browns in Michigan is to slap (yes slap) a big #2 Muddler down on the water about 15 feet in front of you. Big browns hit it like a freight train. They are going for the mouse that just fell in the water. Sounds like someone threw a rock in the water when they hit. On nights of waining half moon to new moon. Middle of July to late August. Hot steamy nights that are pitch black. Scary black nights when the river grows wide and deep and things go bump in the night. Inch along and listen for a brown feeding downstream. Don’t try to fish more than a half mile and be sure you know how to get back.
We like to fish upstream at twilight with a dry, then put on a Muddler and fish back down to where you started. That’s why I tie a handshake loop in my leader up at .009 or .011 and I can switch out a 5x tapered leader to a shorter level leader w/o a re-tie for the night.
Wish I had been able too. My wife left this AM for a trip with her sister and aging mother to Hawaii to visit one of her brothers … my presence here was required to avoid house/dog/cat sitting problems. Pretty hard to complain, though, as my lovely bride allowed me to be ‘gone fishin’ from May 7th till Oct 7th without a word of complaint … I AM blessed ( and I know it ).
I bet the Mahoganies got going strong … how about the tiny bright green baetis/pseudo guys? Last year it was too damn cold and snowing by early Oct … this year it wasn’t even Fall-like yet … next year I’ll plan on being there later
