Shwapf

I’ve been trying to tie up some of Al’s SHWAPF’s. I actually caught my first trout on a fly that I tied this past summer and it was a SHWAPF. (Which I immediately took off the line and put in my vest, just so I could keep the fly as a keepsake. Then lost it before I got back to the car.:frowning: I just told my self that some kid might find it and start fly fishing because of it. :)) Anyway, I’ve been using hair from a squirell tail and just got to wondering if any of you have tied any and what sort of material did you use?

Just curious,
hNt

Hi hNt,

I’ve tied a few up using squirrel tail as well.

Natural and dyed squirrel tail, flash material (krystal flash, etc), deer and moose hair, coyote hair, …the list goes on and on. Had really good luck with the ones tied with flash material.

Right on with the flash material! I’ve done well with SHWAPFs having a dark chenille body and various colors of Angel Hair (Krystal Flash) for the back/wing…and sometimes tail. For some reason, I seem to do best with those VERY early in the season for bluegills. I think they must sort of look like water boatmen and backswimmers?
I haven’t tied very many with natural fibers yet.

Hmm, sounds like I might need to give that a try. I’ve never even caught a Brookie, but with the east tennessee gathering in a few weeks I’m hopeing to fix that. It’d be pretty cool if I could catch a brookie on a SHWAPF that I had tied. I caught a rainbow and a brown on a SHWAPF that I tied earlier this year, it’d be pretty neat to add a brookie to the list with the same type of fly all in the same year. Assuming of course that I manage to catch anything.

If you want to get wild and crazy try tying one with hairs from your beard. I’ve caught fish that way. Guard hairs from mink or muskrat would work well for smaller flies. Craft fur should also work well.

I have tied them with elk, moose, and badger and they make great dry flies.
