Should I disown my son?

I could never figure out those redfish tourneys from the few that I watched. Seeing as it is all catch and release but they can only keep slot limit fish and the person with the largest fish between such and such inches is the winner. I don’t understand how catching the biggest fish over the slot doesn’t put you on top or at least any recognition. You will have to refresh my memory

But congrats anyway on a job well done being able to compete with all those crankers

JH, RW again,

Read the feature article and photo-shoot I did for the new edition of FAOL coming out on Monday. It is surprising to me how timely your post is. What’s not surprising is the positive feedback you are getting from FAOL members on this thread. I think fly-fishers get a bad rap about their snobbish/elitist behavior towards other anglers. I think it’s more wive’s tales than anything else…perpetrated by just a few knuckleheads and hack writers.

To have sons, daughters and good friends that share their fishing experiences together throughout a lifetime is a rare thing in this fast paced world we live in today, regardless of the fishing venue they pursue. Many folks envy, not disparage, what you are experiencing right now.

My twin boys are 45 and they have been fishing with me since they were 2 or 3 years old. All I ever asked of them is that they obey the law, respect the resource, show respect and proper stream etiquette to other anglers, and have fun.

I think I have succeeded along those lines, and you seem to have had similar success. Congratulations on your son’s accomplishments…I’d share a bass boat, a trout stream or a bluegill/redear honey hole with you guys any day.

Later, RW

Thanks R Dubyah,

While my posting was pretty obviously tongue
in cheek, the responses have been very
positive. My son is enjoying his 15 minutes
of fame and looking forward to the fish off
with great expectations.

Looking forward to your article Monday. As
far as a snobbish click in flyfishing
circles, I can only assume you are reffering
to the 1 weight elitists.G Warm regards,
Jim

Jim,

Only an imprisoned man can truly appreciate freedom. Similarly, I’m sure your son will some day see the light, but he must first crawl through the darkness to understand the source of this light.

Congrats to him on his successes and I’m sure your teachings and efforts haven’t all been in vain.

Once he understands that catching isn’t the important part of fishing, he’ll come home.

Best to you,

Fred

Frankly Jim, I’m sure a lot of us could outfish those Pro Bass & Redfish boys any old day in any tournament casting a fly to their lures !!!.. Hopefully he made the pro cut because he learned some good things from the fly fishing end !!! He reached a goal of success (maybe not in the area or way you wanted), but still as a parent that always deserves a response of “I’m proud of you son”!!! Anything less, & you’re better off keeping your mouth shut !!! I love fly fishing the best & do it all the time, but will never disown my kids for excelling in another type of fishing
(unless it’s unethical), or any area for that matter !!! I look foward to watching your son on ESPN2 !!!

Jim:

Have him read “Fishing on the Edge : The Mike Iaconelli Story”

It’s a great book…

Oh, and congrats!

Wow that is great news!! I’ll bet that Mike was really something in the service!

Eric “nighthawk”

It’s a great day for fly fishing!

Sounds like you should surely banish him!!!

Sorry, I’ve got to go back to work on dry land and dream about fishing while I’m behind the wheel on million mile long slab of concrete.

Congrats and best luck to your son!!!

Adam

Jim,
Congrats to you and your son. I fished tournaments in my younger days and it’s not easy to make it to the finals.
Hope he has a blast.
Best,
Steve

Teach him the “Walleye Song.” then he can do his own commercials!
