Should I bring a flyrod to Austin, TX?

Hello everyone,

I’ve got a business trip to Austin, TX and will have one free morning in between meetings. Is it worth it to bring a fly rod? 3wt or 5wt? I’ll be staying at a hotel about 5 miles from Lake Travis, so any information about shoreline access or species available would be helpful. Thank you!

Welcome to FAOL. I don’t know about you, but I try to take my travel rod and fly assortment with me wherever I go. Just be certain that you are legal to fish if you are not a resident of the state you’re visiting.

Yeah, I don’t know why I needed to get reassurance from the wonderful folks of FAOL. I guess after 2 years of no fishing (got married and have a 9-month old), I needed to have the training wheels! LOL! Or maybe flyfishing really is an addiction, that is, the more you do it, the more you NEED to do it.

Lake Travis is probably best fished by boat (or maybe kayak if you have enough time). It’s a very large lake and when the wind get’s going, can be a challenge on the water. Depending on which way you’ll be, it might be easier to rent a kayak on Town Lake (Ladybird Lake) and fish the shoreline for that morning. According to my daughter, it’s been pretty cold there lately, so you might want to check the weather. If you have more time, there’s trout fishing just down the road on the Guadalupe River near New Braunfels.

So definitely carry your rod(s) - probably the 5 wt since it will work equally well for bass, bream, or trout. Good Luck and welcome to FAOL.

ALWAYS carry a fly rod…never know. Don’t miss an opportunity to fish. Nothing worse than getting somewhere and wishing you had brought one. Been there and it hasn’t happened since.

My philosophy has always been "It’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. I carry a 8’6’’ 7 piece 6 wt everywhere. Don’t take much room and comes in handy when I least expect it. Took it to San Antonio, TX Labor Day weekend '07 and would have fished the Riverwalk but for my bride and the Marriott hotel security guy. :oops:LOL Jim

this time of year you’ll probably find white bass in the tailwaters below the dam. When I lived in Austin I used to catch them with clousers with a 6 or 7 weight rod. They average a pound and a half to two pounds and fight well. The smaller impoundments below lake Travis are probably easier to fish. (bass, bluegills etc.)
