The person responsible for the shooting of the sow brown bear at the Russian River has been charged. The cubs are doing fine for now, but have been a little mischievous.

Seems like our worst fears of this incident have proven true. It was not self defence, but pure ignorance on behalf of a moron. Perhaps rather than jail time, this looser should be left out on Kodiak island with nothing more than a swiss army knife and a couple pounds of bacon! I am glad they caught this dude.

I think it is great that they caught this loser, but unfortunate that he is only being charged with 6 misdemeanor charges (or in other words, 6 slaps on the wrist). Perhaps other criminal and civil charges are available on the AK books that would be appropriate and send a more powerful message to others contemplating such action.
I just don’t see how anyone could shoot a bear or a deer or any other animal. I shot a couple ducks once, and in the skinning and cooking of the pair I changed my outlook forever. I’m just not a hunter anymore after that. I know that any fish I catch, I’ll eat, or I’ll put back in the water.

A lifetime ban on the idiot ever getting a fishing or hunting license again might be a good start!!! Fines that cover all expenses incurred in catching him, relocation of the cubs, time and salaries of the wardens and any other items involved in this atrocity. Had a similar game poaching case in the area where the judge asked all the “experts” involved to estimate their salaries etc. and also factored that into the reimbursement by the defendant.

I fished the Russian River in Alaska many times during 1970/71 when I lived there. I remember that the silvers were so thick in the river that the entire river bed looked like a silver mass heading slowly upstream. I also remember adults and kids fishing the river, and I mean little kids, armed to the teeth with everything from rifles to pistols. Funny, I never carried a weapon, didn’t have one, and I was never bothered by a bear on that river. Although I did catch hell from a game warden for improperly releasing a salmon. Actually he showed me how to do it properly and we parted company on very good terms. I hope they throw the book at the a*****e who killed that sow. Grizzlies, and I have seen a number of theme in the wild over the years, are incredible creatures deserving our admiration and protection. Enough of my ranting, lets all go fishing this weekend and leave the weapons at home.

I think I had the previledge to fish in the company of the Sow and her 3 cubs on the Russian 2 months ago. I managed to snap a few photos at about 200 yards.
we kept our distances and admired them from far and they maintained their distance while searching for sockeye carcasses in the stream.
Its a pity that we had lost such a beautiful animal. I personally feel that a deterrant sentence should be given for such irresponsible acts to prevent future occurrances.
It seems that there is always some lunatic with a gun, who is always ready and willing to kill something. I’m glad they caught the idiot. I hope they took his guns away so that he can’t kill anything else.
