Shirt Pocket Fly boxes

Hi Folks,

About once a year I like to post about
my favorite shirt pocket fly boxes. You
can find the same or similar boxes with
fly fishing logo’s on them for about $10.
If however your like me and don’t need the
fancy logo, you can still get these from
Walmart for $.97 each.G Normally they
will be near the pharmacy in metal baskits
holding travel soap boxes, pill boxes, and
toothbrush boxes. Worth checking out!

I picked up some of these a while ago after reading about them here (your last years post?). They nice for small flies. I also use one for small jigs and curly tail grubs for spinning for panfish. They work great, and the price is right too!

Thanks for letting us know about them, Jim. I’ve got three of them, one for bream flies, one for Speck flies, and one for light spin tackle. I even gave two to a fishing buddy.

Jim,

Thanks for the tip. I really like this style of box and I will keep my eyes open while touring Wally-World.

Word of warning, guys, don’t go looking for these in sporting goods, or that’s where we’ll find them next, only the price will be $5.97.

I use these quite often but my favorite shirt pocket box is an altoids tin.

Jim;
Plano makes a cigrette pack size water proof box. I’ll send you a photo.

I personally like the empty hook boxes my Eagle Claws come out of for my shirt pockets while fishing locally. They are about 3 inches by 4 inches by 1 inch deep with a flip lid. I just throw them all in there and let them mix it up with each other. I generally only carry about 2-3 dozen flies for my local stream so they all fit easily and the price is “free”.

Travelling is another story. That takes 12-15 organized boxes.LOL

Jim
I buy one everytime I am in that section of Wal*Mart. I got a shoebox full of em. I think Orvis sells the exact same box for 9 bucks.

My Daughter and Son inlaw are Altoids junkies. I get a lot of "shirt pocket fly boxes from them. I use hot glue and 2mm foam to make compartments. One down the middle lingth wise for clousers and buugers, or across the short side for 2 or 3 smaller compartments. They are not quite water tight but they will float for a long time.

Hey folks,

I have looked in my Wal-Mart here and cannot find these great little boxes. Would someone be willing to send a few my way? I can send a few $$.

Thanks,

Brian,

These same boxes are also carried in The Container Store so you can check there as well of there are any near you. If you are still not able to find them, drop me an email and I’ll send a couple your way.

I was so excited by this bargain I would pick up 1 or 2 everytime I went to Wallys for a while. I musta ended up with a dz or so.

You folks that use Altoid boxes…do they rust?

Ducksterman

If you treat them just as you do your flies they do not rust any more then the hooks. I just open them up and set the next to my hat and sunglasses. Just grab them all at the same time. I also have a couple that live in my truck with a travel rod just in case I see a rise.

PS if you use the 2mm foam for diveders the will not sink.

In the same vein I use the mult day pill boxes for hook storage in my flytying equipment. The 7 day boxes are only $2-3 and the “month” size is about $6.00 [usually “4 weeks”, 28 compartments]. If you look around at drugstores [and Wallyworld] you can find them with seperate covers. A 10 place hook box from Cabelas is about $6 or $7 dollars [+shipping charges!].

Pill boxes at Dollar or 99cent stores = $1

Thanks for the heads-up Jim. I got mine (3) today. I also tried something new. I have a couple of local companies that send these flat magnets for the refrigerator to advertise their services. If you slide your fingernail under the glossy plastic side of the magnet, you can peel away the advertisement leaving a sticky side. Cut to size with your house hold scissors (not your fly tying pair) and stick it down in the big single side of the box. Now you can put those #28’s in there and keep them separated.

I am teaching my pastor and his daughter how to fly fish and these will make great first fly boxes for them. I got a green one for Brother Charles and a pink one for Maryanna.

Clint

I feel closer to HIM when I’m fishing.

Thanks Clint,

Great tip on the magnets! I like to use
the boxes for individual swaps with FAOLers
as well as including one with extra flies
in it for swap hosts. Warm regards, Jim

They probably do, but if you use Altoids, you have an unending supply of replacement boxes.
