sculpin spunning

Hi there,
I’m really into tying deerhair sculpin flies, now, I’m making some progress shaping heads with a razor, but spunning hair in different colors is still a bit hard, like getting white on the bottom and gray on top. also the hair comes out a bit uneven after I shaped the heads…
Anyone with any tips regarding tying, spunning and shaping?
Also what is a good book to learn from?
thanks.

There are a number of different tricks including stacking hair.

Chris Helm’s has two DVD’s out on spinning hair. Everything you need to know.

troutbuster,

I second Steven on the Chris Helms DVDs. Although there are many books that show you how to spin deer hair, a set of photos does not show spinning and stacking deer hair as well as a video does.

If the hair is coming in uneven you might not be packing it tight enough. Shaping with a razor takes practice. I ruined many good flies when I was first learning how to do it.

Regards,

Alberto

Chris Helm’s spinning deer hair video/DVD. Excellent video shows you how in easy step by step process how to get white on the bottom or spots on the side. How to spin or flair, trim. No real patterns just all the techniques on how to do anything with deer hair. Highly recommended. Better than any book.

thanks guys,
Sounds like a got to have DVD, do you know where I can buy it online?

I called the local store, and they seem to have 3 different DVD’s of chris helm, bassbugs, one about trout flies and one with pike flies, wich is most recommendable when it comes to techniques?

I think the one you want is “Spinning Deer Hair.” It’s part of the Hooked on Fly Tying series.

It’s available at [url=http://www.feather-craft.com,:b60ee]www.feather-craft.com,[/url:b60ee] but I think it only comes in VHS.

Steven is correct “Spinning Deer hair” is the one you want.

charliesflybox has an excellent tutorial on staked deer hair . Go to the site open the fly box and spool down thru the flies until you find
the bass bug

I found that useing an electric beard trim work well for triming and shaping spun deer hair flys. lol, I just use my old one, it now part of my tying tools and I found lot of uses for it in tying

Too bad I always shave “wet” G

I watched one tier dressing some very nice Muddler Minnow variants using what looked like “sculpin wool” instead of spun deer hair. They were all very nice looking. He still had to trim them. Since he is a retired heart surgeon, everything was done very deftly, as might be expected. Feel free to ask for a second opinion of his flies.
