Getting ready to test them on bluegill and other panfish. Jigs are tied on 1/124-ounce heads.
Scuds are weighted with .17 lead wire.

Lookin good! Why so small on the jigs? I’ve got a bunch of 1/80-oz and they’re small enough to easily cast with a 5-wt.
I usually fish with a 1 or 2 weight.
The stuff I use is called Scud Back by Wapsi. Probably the same or similar material.
Nice looking scuds! Where do you get .17 lead wire? seen .15 and .20, but not the .17, which would, I believe, work well for my #10 woolly buggers.
I’m not sure where I got it. I ordered it last spring from an online source. I can tell you that’s it’s “square” lead.
Sweet ties! They will well for bass also. Fun on the UL fly rods.

Jeff: Just FYI: the owner of my local fly shop suggested that instead of spending money on material for scud shells, just save the clear bags/packaging from fly hooks/beads/etc… and cut whatever size you need from that material.
Thank you for your kind comments. I don’t mind spending a little to buy the scud back material. It comes in different colors and I don’t have to mess with cutting plastic bags.
I believe that also, I dont mind helping out at the local shops buying materials. It can keep them in business in this sad economy.
Oh believe me! This local fly shop is getting plenty of business from me! (Just bought yet another new rod, reel, and line from them even though they would have been less expensive online.) Besides, the shop’s owner was the person who suggested using the bags!

I believe in supporting local fly shops. I only wish we had a local fly shop. I’m forced to buy materials online.
