Scintilla Dubbing has gone the way of the Dodo Bird

Some tyers who like Scintilla Dubbing may have missed the information that Scintilla has been discontinued. There are still shops around with a good supple but they are becoming fewer and far between. If you use a must-have, favorite color, you might want to purchase a couple of packs before it disappears completely. Quite a large number of flies specify Scintilla Dubbing in their recipes. The following are some of the results of my Google search:

This is the great Scintilla dubbing made by Ken Ligas. Ken formulated his dubbing to work with the Borger Color System Chart, which is the only scientific way of recording exact colors of insects in the field. Unfortunately this dubbing is the last of its kind. Ken finally decided that he is tired of making dubbing, so the limited amount we have in stock is the last available in certain colors. Don’t worry there is no is no price raise for this rare and unusual dubbing. When it is gone, it’s gone. Fly Fishing Shop Welches, Oregon

This classic dubbing is being discontinued and extremely hard to find. Selection is limited to stock on hand, while they last. Better get it while you can. The word “scintilla” means to sparkle, twinkle, flash, or gleam. That described this dubbing. It’s a blend of fine natural and symthetic materials and the colors are keyed with the Borger Color System. Some tiers say that if they could only have one dubbing material it would be scintilla because it is very versatile and easy to handle. Tie it thick with a dubbing loop or twist it tight for a slender body. Fly Tying World

This happen way too often is this field.
Ralph Graves says it best “When you see some kind of material that you like or use alot get as much as you can because you never know when you won’t be able to get it again.”

Ash,

Dubbing and artificial wing material seems to be especially prone to disappear even when it gets good press and a good response from the fly tying public. :frowning: 8T

redacted,

Bugsy,
I have found that in the past there are never many people who want to take on a large task like that other then places like Hareline or Waspi. I have dozens of products that were amazing sellers, I’m talking off the shelfs before I got them and when the company went under or they drop that product that was it.
Joe

I’ve bought moe than a few things for tying I have liked, and then discovered they were gone. Same with rods, line, clothes, you name it. But if the man doesn’t want to make the stuff any more, let him be.

By the way, when it is worth a bunch of $, I will sell off the scintilla I have here somewhere. S
