scientific anglers new sharkskin line

I was just thinking that an afternoon of casting with Castwell would improve my distance regardless of what line I had on the reel…

I beg to differ with GnuBee. I tried it at the fish-in, and after about four casts, handed the rod to someone else and got on with my life. I did NOT like the way it GRATED through the guides, and frankly, I didn’t think it cast any better than any other line. The rough surface seems a perfect way to pick up grit, and I wonder just how long the guides on a rod would last with that thing grinding through them on every cast. Says the guy who wears out guides on his rods.

So… I am not even considering buying one.

The research shows the guides do not wear any differently and the line actually seemed to stay cleaner than ordinary lines and last three times longer as well making the price a good value although the initial outlay is high for many economy-minded guys. SA says to still use their line cleaner. The line does require less effort for any distance including double-hauling. Some newer fly fishers are upset with the sound where the veteran fly fishers ‘recognize’ the old sound of silk.

I have heard that Rio might be working an a similar type of line. Not that I am aware of. The Rio Gold with all of it’s features is still their pride and joy and I don’t think they are concerned in any way. And it costs less, is quiet and the tip floats pretty darn nice.

Here’s another way to put a positive spin…a quote from one of their descriptions of the line…

"This line “SINGS” through the guides!!! "

Well, if they made it in a DT, in a nice drab color, and GUARANTEED me 1500 hours of use before it was too worn out to fish, I might try one. Then again, maybe not. This $2.25 line I got is working pretty well…
