Schlappen???

Hi there,

I was surfing around the other night for some spey patterns, found a couple really nice ones that I want to have in the box for Atlantic Salmon (I have never tied spey flies before). I have everything except schlappen, what is schlappen? I looked for some pictures and it looks like some of my hackle I have already but the ones I have are not marked schlappen. So, what is schlappen? Do you tie it on at the front of the hook and wrap backward? or, tie it in by the tip of the hackle at the back of the hook and wrap forward? Does it have specific characteristics that makes it different from webby saddle hackles I already have?

Thanks, Dwight

Schlappen are feathers that are between the tail feathers and the saddle. They are 100% web with fine stems.

If you are having any trouble finding it take a look here, www.jannsnetcraft.com they have it at very reasonable prices in several colors. Hope this helps, Dave
