Any advice for fishing Sand Creek, WY in early November?
I am going on a deer hunting trip with my father near Sundance WY in early November. He is an avid fisherman and I would really like to show him some fly fishing. I have read about Sand Creek near where we are hunting and was wondering if anyone had any advice on trying to catch a trout.
I have seen that there is some public land with a campground for stream access. Other than that I don’t know much about the area or the fish.
Thanks,
Mike
Mike-- I have fished Sand Creek a number of times during the winter months. There is plenty of public access and it is easy to get to. First things first, the water is extremely clear and the fish are very spooky, so stealth is definitely in order, and an overcast day would certainly help. You can do most of your casting from the banks, and i would stay out of the water as much as possible. You certainly wont have any issues being able to spot fish. Most of my success has come with small nymphs in the size 20 range (copper john has always been a standby)and small midge dries will also take fish. Good luck and enjoy a beautiful area!
